not like you love your freedom

Happy spring, flist! It's not quite warm out yet, but it's getting there, and I saw my first local crocuses today. ♥ I feel so much better; I never realize quite how cranky winter was making me until it starts going away.

I was planning on writing some kind of big, thorough Watchmen review, but I can't seem to get into it, so nevermind. :) Basically, I would have done the whole feel of the film differently (grittier, more visceral violence rather than Matrix-style special effects; I thought the shiny was all wrong for the story even though I was expecting it). For what it was, it did a decent job, but I realized that . . . I didn't really want there to be a Watchmen movie, after all. I don't think we need to make movies out of every good book; it didn't bring anything new to the story, and it took all kinds of things away.

I did love the opening credits, though. *_* And there were other bits and pieces, but probably not enough to make me want to watch it again.

Speaking of comics, I just dumped most of the superhero titles off my pull list (except for Runaways and Wonder Woman, I think). I've just gotten bored with most of the stories they're telling these days, they seem more and more generic. :/ I need some new stuff to read, too; a lot of my indie titles come out very irregularly. I haven't had anything new the last two Wednesdays in a row, which makes me sad.

Fanart things have been really stalled lately (while I draw really lame autobiographical nonsense, no less), but I am determined to jumpstart that this weekend. I have been listening to TBP nonstop for the last few days, and getting ridiculously excited about BBB (jjtaylor will keep on tantalizing me). And Pete's fourth wall shenanigans! I can't believe I've already been in this fandom for almost a year; I love it so much. ♥

001. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
002. I will respond by asking you ANY five questions of a very intimate and creepily personal nature. Or not so creepy/personal.
003. You WILL update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
004. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
005. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.
Questions from blondiusmaximus (and I am waaay too wordy, as usual):
1. Tell me about some of your favorite artists!
Oh man, that's not easy! *g* I mean, as far as comics goes, a lot of my favorite art is the kind I'm trying to emulate, so black & white, semi-realistic but with its own snazzy stylistic twists . . . people like Carla Speed McNeil D*nna B*rr (lady Googles herself like crazy), Linda Medley, Colleen Doran, Terry Moore, Alison Bechdel, Jaime Hernandez . . . but I love most of them for their writing as well. Ooh, and speaking of the pantspress folks: Dylan Meconis. Other artists I really admire but don't so much try and emulate include Charles Vess, James Jean . . . I really like Alphonse Mucha . . . and I have always had a soft spot for the Impressionists (particularly Renoir) and for medieval iconographic/religious art.

2. If you could write your own graphic novel, what would it be about? Do you think you'll ever do a full graphic novel?
Well, so far a lot of my stories seem to be very coming of age oriented, and I really like playing around with Catholic theology. I've had this story sitting on the back burner for awhile now (I worked on a couple different versions in high school and college) which is kind of about the Second Coming (maybe), all tied up with a coming of age story that might be a little too personal. I don't know if I'll manage that one, but I definitely want to do a full graphic novel, or preferably several. Considering I can barely pull off a few pages at a time right now, we'll see!

3. What are some of your favorite mediums to work in?
I definitely love working with inks; pens, since I'm a slacker. (My favorite part is once I have the lines down and the pencil erased, and I can just sit there picking away at the details. Yay hatching.) I use micron pigmas, particularly the finer tips (.005 ♥). I also really like doodling in blue ballpoint on yellow paper, for some reason (a lot of my recent stuff has gotten planned out on post-its at work). Sometimes I love Photoshop, but sometimes I hate it . . . probably because I'm basically finger-painting. I need to borrow my roommate's tablet so I can learn to use it properly.

4. What is your favorite guilty pleasure music?
Oh dear. *g* Honestly, I'm not sure what qualifies anymore. Bandom music on the whole is pretty different from most of my other stuff, and I don't think any of my non-bandom friends like any of it (except the Dresden Dolls, and occasionally the Hush Sound when I make them), but it's still not really guilty pleasure. I do have a couple of anime soundtracks left over from early high school that I sometimes play. And, I have a couple Enya CDs from a brief phase in middle school? /o\ In college I'd pull them out when I was really freaking out the night before an exam.

5. Where is a really special place that you have visited?
Hmmm. There are a few, but. I went to Portland (Oregon) for about a week in the summer of 2007, mostly because I'd managed to wrangle a tour of Dark Horse's editorial offices. It was kind of personal too, though: I was born there and hadn't been back since I was under a year old, so I was really curious. I was at this weird place in my life where I'd just quit a year-long post-college retail job and I didn't know quite what I was going to do next. I spent a lot of time wandering around the city with a friend, getting the feel for it, and I also had comics-heaven for a little while before going to lunch with Scott Allie and basically having him try and warn me off the whole thing. (He said some really good stuff about getting out there and doing it, but not having any shortcuts - say, trying to wheedle one's way into a low-level editorial position. It really put me in my place, but it was good for me.)

I guess that's more like a special time than a special place, but I totally fell in love with the city as well, and it's a secret plan of mine to move there someday.
