Oh my gosh, I am so sorry this took me so long. The last couple weeks have been completely overwhelming at work, etc, and I’ve struggled to find the bandwidth. I hope it hasn’t caused you too much trouble!
Anyway, thank you so much for offering to make me something! I am delighted and grateful that you offered to create for one of my eclectic set of beloved fandoms. I cannotwait to see what you come up with.
So I tend to err on the side of relatively long/detailed prompts; I figure if you don’t like those you can ignore them, but if you love prompts and I don’t give any,the equivalent doesn’t exactly apply. Go with what will make you happy! That will, in turn, make me happy. :D
General likes: first times/getting together, playing with power dynamics/power exchange, working relationships-turned-something-more, rivalry and conflict that sparks sexual tension. Wacky hijinks and humor. Some tropes (fake relationships are a fave), and trope subversions (soulbonds/soulmates is one I like to see turned on its head a lot). Happy endings (to the appropriate degree for the individual pairing/canon, naturally). Sexytimes, kink (D/s, bondage, service, roleplaying). For art, I particularly love scenes that look like they’re in the middle of the action/an illustration from some kind of story. And cracky humor. I also tend to prefer sexy and suggestive art to anything fully explicit. (Oh, and please remember that many of the characters in my requests are not white! It’s always pretty upsetting when fanart inadvertently whitewashes someone.)
DNW: non-con, non-canon character death, grim-darkness, character bashing, cheating/jealousy, excessive (ie non-canon-typical) violence, A/B/O (or any mates/biological imperative stuff), soulmarks, super fluffy domesticity. I also tend to be kind of picky about AUs and crossovers, especially for fic (I'm generally not very into them when they're just for the hell of it, and don't spring from some specific connection with the characters/canon).
Here, have some more specific fandom/pairing thoughts. Sorry for the teal deer?
The Craft Sequence
Tara Abernathy/Catherine Elle
I like the somewhat uneasy partnership between these two; they have different backgrounds and internal issues, but they’re good at working together where their interests align, and I appreciate the way that they both seem inclined to push each other. I’d enjoy a story about them working together through aftermath/rebuilding, set after either Three Parts Dead (as Tara deals with her career change, and Cat with the shift from Justice to Seril) or Four Roads Cross (Seril could give them some interesting common ground at that point)! Fighting, arguing … making out? ;)
Art-specific prompts: a night on the town together? Post-battle (or bar brawl) makeouts? (Bonus for an exasperated/embarrassed Abelard somewhere in the vicinity.)
Seril/Tara Abernaty
I was not expecting to ship this, but after Four Roads Cross … a goddess brought down almost to mortal level, and having to deal with thinking, communicating and perhaps feeling in those terms? And a Craftswoman, already off-balance because of her shift in allegiance, who finds herself working so closely with the divine that they practically share a skin? Damn. An elaboration on their interactions in the book could be fabulous, or working together (complete with continuing tension) on post-book rebuilding projects? Seril, having regained her sky, dealing with the shift in perspective (again)? Tara getting a little fed up/reluctantly intrigued by Seril’s continuing tendency to borrow Tara’s appearance for physical manifestation?
Art-specific prompt: Seril-as-Tara hitting on/making out with Tara?
Seril/Catherine Elle
I’d love to read an exploration of the bond between avatar/servant and goddess, especially one that explores Cat building a new relationship with Seril in the wake of her more problematic and painful experience as a soldier of Justice. Perhaps set after Four Roads Cross, building on what we’ve seen there … Cat has finally ’surrendered’ in some sense, so what now?
Art-specific prompt: semi-reluctant Divine communion? However you want to play that. ;)
BONUS: Tara/Cat/Seril
Some combination of the above? :)
Kai Pohala/Teo Batan
I really enjoyed the push and pull between these two in Full Fathom Five, and I think it’d be fascinating to explore a continuing connection between them after the story, perhaps as part of navigating business arrangements in the wake of all the changes on Kavekana? It would be fascinating to watch more interplay between their wildly different philosophies and allegiances.
Art-specific prompts: mid-negotiation flirting? Out at poetry night, trying to relax with each other? Intense idol-poolside debate?
Tara Abernathy/Elayne Kevarian
I have a bit of a weakness for boss/protege relationships, especially where the boss character often presents as devastatingly unflappable, but is also willing to go to the mat for her assistant. It might be interesting to see Tara and Elayne reconnecting (working together on a case?) after the events of Four Roads Cross, navigating the way their positions have changed in relationship to each other? Conversely, something set during or immediately after Three Parts Dead, where Tara is learning from Elayne, or Elayne is processing Tara’s decision to stay in Alt Columb?
Art-specific prompts: working on a piece of complex Craftwork together? Possibly with some surprising results for one of them? Dapper professional clothing is a must with these two. ;)
Killjoys
Dutch/Delle Seyah Kendry
So I confess, I kind of fll in love with the dynamic between these two in the first season, when Delle was a bit more morally grey and they kept tripping across the line between adversaries and (reluctant, on Dutch’s side) allies, with a whole big dose of UST. So honestly, I’m still kind of craving fic set back then, before the storyline got a bit darker and the Hullen plot took over? Maybe something focused on some kind of side caper, pairing social intrigue and badassery with a whole lot of sexual tension. The two of them ping my taste for power exchange/struggle, both of them so used to being in control of their own respective situations, and I’d love to see each of them thrown off-balance in turn (maybe each forced to try out each others’ social roles and surroundings) … maybe something fun and tropey, like a fake relationship?
That said, I confess, I’m two episodes behind on the current season, and Delle’s current plot is certainly fascinating. So if you have an awesome idea based on more current stuff, I will be just as excited! I guess I’m just not looking for anything too grim?
Art-specific prompts: some awesome noir-type setting, fancy costuming, getting all up in each others’ space, in the middle of some kind of caper where they’re clearly playing roles, etc?
Dutch/Lucy
I’ve had a bit of a thing going for AI/human relationships, relationships between captains and ships, etc lately. And Lucy doesn’t get nearly enough attention as a member of the team in her own right! I love how sharp and quippy she is, and how she’ll side with Dutch in making fun of the Jacobis. Anything that develops their relationship would be rad, really, from their earliest meetings/learning to work together to … an exploration of how a more sexual relationship might work when one of the participants is non-corporeal/the whole SETTING rather than another body in it (and either way, not very available for physical interaction as such). Fleshing Lucy out a bit (her past, what it’s like to BE a sentient ship within the world of the show) totally encouraged.
Art-specific prompts: okay, this is a TOUGH one. If it were me,I’d go straight for comics, but hm. Maybe Dutch hanging out in the cockpit chatting with Lucy (although I think you’d still need a word balloon or two …) Or maybe you can think of some way for Lucy to use her systems to interact with Dutch in some small physical way? Hm.
Marvel 616
Rachel/Kitty
One of my oldest, most ironclad OTPs; you can imagine how over the moon I was when Chris Claremont essentially declared them canon last year. I love their entire, complicated history--the importance of future "Kate" to Rachel's past, blended with her friendship with 616 Kitty (almost immediately her closest and most trusted ally in the confusing "new" world)--but I do have a particular attachment to the Excalibur era, complete with a more confident Rachel, zany adventures and the two of them being Lighthouse roommates.
So maybe wacky Excalibur-style hijinks? Cross-Time Capers absolutely encouraged! But if you’re less into/familiar with that era, maybe something at the Jean Grey Academy, two teachers trying to hide their relationship from a school full of obnoxious superpowered teens? Or something from the future, with Rachel working on one of Kitty’s political campaigns in Chicago? (Much as I appreciate the ’married’ vibe, though, I don’t have a very high opinion of the overall storytelling in X-Men: The End, so maybe steer clear of that, plot-wise.) On a slightly angstier note, I do have a special attachment to the "kiss hello" speech from Excalibur #75, so if you wanted to play on that …?
Art-specific prompts: Same again, really … wacky hijinks, clandestine teacher makeouts, clandestine candidate/political campaign manager makeouts? Alan Davis’s curly-haired, young-Katharine-Hepburn-inspired Kitty is definitely ’my’ Kitty, but feel free to ditch Ray’s mullet if you’re playing with that era. :p I’ve always thought she’d look great with short, choppy punk hair.
Once Upon A Time
Emma/Regina
Okay, so...I’ve only watched OUAT through season four, which you might want to bear in mind. I just kept getting frustrated with the increased focus on mashing in more Disney properties instead of doing interesting things with the existing characters and some of the earlier-on play with fairy tale themes. And the canon romantic subplots mostly irritated the hell out of me.
That said? GOD, these two. I’ve always had such a thing for enemies/rivals (who eventually become allies and even friends), and Emma and Regina are irresistible. I loved them when they were mortal enemies (neither of whom knew quite who the other was and what she represented), when as mayor and sheriff they were ostensibly working together and really working as hard as they could against each other. I love them as reluctant co-parents, each with their own issues and challenges, trying to cooperate and find what’s best for their kid. Regina teaching Emma magic was so delightful and full of possibility! And
then there was this.
Honestly, something canon-divergent jumping right off from that scene above, where Emma tries to help Regina find happiness(and then they do, together?) would be brilliant. Or something set earlier, playing with any of the dynamics above! Give me complicated, emotionally reluctant women struggling to find each other and let themselves be happy and open to the changes in their lives. Give me happy, but … maybe problematize the Disney idea of Happily Ever After they kept trying to feed us. It seems far too pat for people like Emma and Regina, tbh. Play with fairy tale themes? (The less … explicitly Disney the better?) Or make it lighthearted and tropey! I do enjoy that. :)
Art-specific prompts: A magic lesson gets… steamy. Play on classic fairy tale illustrations. Queen/knight imagery. Something with apples.
Wayfarers
Rosemary/Sissix
I adored the way this relationship was portrayed in The Long Way To A Small, Angry Planet, especially the way they got together in the first place (careful, respectful communication and working to figure out different cultural cues!) … but I was disappointed that we didn’t get to see much of its further development! Missing moments from within the story would be neat (continuing cultural exchange, having fun sneaking around a bit behind their crewmates’ backs, etc). Or maybe post-book shore leave? I love all the wide-ranging worldbuilding in Long Way; feel free to play in that as much as you want!
Art-specific prompts: romantic spacewalk (per the end of the book)? Snuggling in one of their quarters on the Wayfarer? (I’d love to see your idea of what the ship might look like, complete with personal touches.)
Pepper/Sidra
Oh gosh, these two. I just wanted to roll around in them learning together and butting heads and becoming family. Both of them had to learn how to be, for some value of the term, human … but their experiences, and the conclusions they drew from them, were often so different! I’d like something post-book, I think … now that Sidra has her own place, her own direction, I’d really enjoy seeing them continue that trajectory, into a more romantic direction. (Ideally it’d be a vee-shaped poly sort of thing, because Pepper/Blue is important.) Bonus for continuing to explore Sidra’s sensation-analogue memory library … ;)
Art-specific prompts: Pepper enjoying a cup of mek and flirting with the bartender! Pepper teasing Sidra by petting/’playing with’ one of her proxy petbots.
Sidra/Tak
Another fantastic exploration of people with really different backgrounds caring about and learning to get on with and accept each other. I loved the bit where Tak would take Sidra out and be understanding of her different needs and interests. That willingness to learn and adapt, especially after the initial shock, was lovely. It might be nice to have a mid-book story where they do other kinds of exploring together. Maybe Tak takes Sidra on a date, and she gets to learn about that and decide whether she’s into the concept? (Maybe in her own way?)
Art-specific prompts: Tak giving tattooing Sidra another try. The two of them dancing together, either at a party or...maybe at Sidra’s bar, in a setting she designed that is more calibrated to her comfort.
Wolf 359 (Radio)
Hera/Alana Maxwell
Ah, so many AI/personhood feels. I love what a complex and problematic bond these two have; it’s entirely clear that Maxwell cares about Hera and is probably better at really understanding and acknowledging her autonomous sentience than anyone else, all while being able to literally go in and take AWAY that autonomy (and doing it,too). It would be fascinating to read about Maxwell ’coming back,’ alien copy style … Hera, having grieved her, having to confront her complicated mix of feelings (caring! betrayal!) all over again, and Maxwell, this time, having identity issues of her own … or, it would be equally great to see more of them working together from earlier in the story, exploring Hera’s past and programming and maybe pushing some new boundaries in the realm of human/AI relations.
Art-specific prompts: Tricky! But I always sort of imagined Hera having her own sort of virtual/internal/almost mental landscape. It would be interesting to see something like that, and how Maxwell would interact with/appear in it. Or, might be interesting to come up with some kind of avatar for Hera (I’m thinking something that doesn’t look 100% realistic/human) and play with screens.
Lovelace/Minkowski
I have shipped this ever since Lovelace showed up and started butting heads with Minkowski and playing tug-of-war with the command structure. Minkowski is probably my favorite character, if I have one, because I LOVE how vulnerable and neurotic she is, and how hard she TRIES. Lovelace, meanwhile, has been through some SHIT and is here to do what it takes (and screw anyone who doesn’t like it). No wonder there was tension. But much as I enjoyed their conflicts, I’m even happier about what a badass team they make! I’d love to read about them taking on some ridiculous mini-crisis (a la plant monsters loose in the air ducts) that puts everyone else ludicrously out of commission. Or just beating them at some kind of game. (I love the humor on this show.) And then celebrating together. ;) A little connection over their respective insecurities (post-alien-reveal!) would be lovely as well.
Art-specific prompts: Glowy alien makeouts? Post-crisis makeouts (with grease-smudged cheeks and a little charring on their uniforms, etc)?
