just tell your gods for me

Second day of the
snowflake_challenge, and bah, I'm already late. I got kind of distracted today with reading Hallucinations, by Oliver Sacks. (Graphic novel research! Eeee.) And rewatching some of Downton Abbey Season 2 with my mother.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

I spent the latter half of the year devouring Teen Wolf fic, which um, could hardly be considered rare or lesser known in the slightest. But I really wanted to try and rec some things that are a little more out of the way! So that was my approach here. That and podfic, because that has been my primary mode of fannish intake this year. Podfic has gotten me through so many hours of toiling away at comic pages, it's untrue. Have some appreciation!

The King's Guard, read by
eosrose, written by
osprey_archer (Queen's Thief; Eugenides/Costis, Attolia/Eugenides)
So I managed to get my hands on audiobooks of Megan Whalen Turner's series this past spring (after hearing about them years ago from
bluestalking), and promptly fell head-over-heels in love. I think I may have listened to them ... four times? during various projects. Well, at least three. (Unprecedented; it usually takes me ages to even listen to an audiobook a second time.) After my first listening, I was desperate for fic; not to fix things or fill in the gaps, as I want for most fandoms, but just so it wouldn't be OVER, dammit. Unsurprisingly, there isn't too much out there, and this is the only podfic I've been able to find, but I was and am delighted by it. It nails the characters beautifully; I giggled at Eugenides's characteristically absurd machinations and Costis's incredibly earnest confusion, but found my heartstrings getting tugged anyway. The bit of Attolia at the end is particularly spot-on, especially with
eosrose's delivery, which is generally great all around and does a wonderful job of punctuating the humor.

Marriage á Trois, read by
sylvaine, written by
sorrel (Sherlock Holmes 2009; Watson/Mary, Holmes/Mary, Holmes/Mary/Watson; Teen&Up)
Okay, so I guess this hasn't exactly been neglected, judging by the bookmark count on AO3, but nevertheless, it's not the most usual focus out there for Holmes fic. And it is almost exactly what I wanted after A Game of Shadows, very kindly recced to me by the reader. I desperately wanted more of Mary after that film, and of her and Sherlock learning to get along! And while this isn't quite the v-shaped poly with badass-teamup I was looking for (going instead for the threesome solution fandom is so fond of, not that I mind), it does a really lovely gradual job of developing the relationships to its chosen conclusion, and of fleshing out Mary (it's told from her very sharp and sensible perspective). Ugh, she's great, and
sylvaine's delivery is perfectly in-tone throughout. I actually forget that her voice isn't Mary's in the film, sometimes.

All The King's Horses, read by
such_heights, written by
lindenharp (Doctor Who; Ten & Donna)
Donna Noble is, hands down, my favorite new!Who companion. I love all of them, but as I think I've mentioned previously a number of times, I really weary of the general unproblematized awe so many characters (and showrunners) hold the Doctor in. And I got especially tired of Ten's angst. Donna was amazing because she was not attracted to him and she was not taking his shit; she was his best friend, and I found it a much more interesting relationship in many ways (even though I totally ship Nine/Rose and Eleven/Amy/Rory and Doctor/River and so on and so forth). But I'm going off on a tangent. Anyway, sometimes I get these huge cravings for genfic, and more frequently, really good plot-focused fic. This rec from
thingwithwings hit the spot for both beautifully. It focuses on all my favorite things about the Doctor & Donna's relationship, allowing her to exhibit her strengths and occasionally getting one up on him without straying unrealistically away from his much-lauded cleverness and interplanetary experience, or her marvelous blustery ridiculousness. And it sets up a really engaging alien-problem-of-the-week sort of scenario, complete with lovely worldbuilding tidbits (alien culture and Time Lord history both)!
such_heights nails both characters' voices beautifully; it takes me right back to the best moments of the show (and that season).

And bonus vid rec ...
Everything is Wrong, by
laurashapiro (Community; Britta-centric)
Okay, this isn't remotely obscure, but I don't care; this vid has been a go-to comfort source for me since it was posted. Community is one of the most "of my heart" shows out there in recent memory; even though a lot of individual episodes and choices really bother me, I've imprinted on these characters and their chosen family dynamic intensely. Britta has consistently been the hardest of the core group for me to deal with (leaving aside Pierce, who I just don't like much), the mottsiest by far ... pretty much because I identify with her way too hard. I don't think this is an uncommon experience! Anyway, this vid reminds me of all the reasons why I love her anyway, and when I'm having a fail day and generally feeling down on myself, it's kind of a fantastic remedy. Ugh, so much love, okay.

I have a lot of feelings about fanwork, you guys. Also, it's so time for bed. G'night!
