Ryan Lochte says he likes suit limitations but would go further

LONDON - Ryan Lochte holds the distinction of being the first swimmer to break a world record after FINA put limitations on the Lazr suits that made world records an hourly occurrence at the Beijing Olympics.

Lochte, who’s first showdown with Michael Phelps is Saturday in the 400 individual medley, said it’s a change long in coming.

“It’s a huge difference,” Lochte said during the U.S. swim team’s press conference Thursday. “Back then anyone who can put on a suit can be fast. It wasn’t really the swimmer making the suit. It was the suit making the swimmer. Now it’s reverse. I like it.

“If I had it my way I’d go back to old school when we were all wearing banana hammocks.”

Missy Franklin, sitting next to Lochte, could not stop laughing.
