Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte to present swimming clinic Saturday in Gulf Shores
GULF SHORES, Alabama -- Ryan Lochte is arguably the top swimmer in the world at the moment and now he's set for a trip to Gulf Shores.
The Olympic gold medal winner will conduct a swimming technique clinic from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday as part of the Southeast Swimposium at the Bodenhamer Recreation Center.
Lochte is coming off a six-gold-medal showing at last month's Pan Pacific Championships, where he defeated Michael Phelps in several events.
"To be able to help swimmers from across the Southeast further develop their love for our sport, while at the same time helping the Swimposium deliver a positive economic impact for Gulf Coast tourism, this was just something I just had to make time to do," Lochte said in a news release. "The entire region's tourism and the people who depend on it for their livelihoods have been devastated by the effects of the oil spill. I wanted to do whatever I could to help make the Swimposium a big success and bring in as many families as possible."
At the 2004 Olympic games in Athens, Greece, Lochte was part of the gold medal-winning 4x200-meter freestyle team and he took silver in the 200 individual medley. He won gold in the 200 backstroke and as part of the 4x200 freestyle team, and bronze in the 400 and 200 individual medleys at the 2008 games in Beijing.
"Ryan is the best of the best and this will be a great opportunity for swimmers from all over the Southeast to learn from him, up close and in the pool," said TNT Swimming coach Jan Mittemeyer.
The Swimposium is hosted by TNT in conjunction with Southeastern Swimming's fall meeting for swim coaches from Alabama, Tennessee and the Florida Panhandle. The coaches will conduct business meetings and attend a seminar with Bryan "PK" Karkoska, Auburn University men's swim team's strength training coach.
A seminar for parents, "Are You a Great Swim Parent?" will be conducted from 9 a.m. to noon by Sue Anderson, USA Swimming's director of programs and services.
The Swimposium cost is $75 for swimmers and $25 for spectators, which includes admission for Waterville USA's Saturday Night Beach Blast, from 6-8 p.m. The Parent Seminar charge is $15. Swimmers and families may register for the Lochte clinic by downloading the registration forms from
www.swimtnt.com, by contacting Mittemeyer at 251-599-1019, or through any USA Swimming team.
