Amusements of a Political Junkie

Sep 15, 2008 15:32

Growing up outside of the beltway and having parents who worked for the government, I developed an admittedly unhealthy interest in politics. It has been a joy and a bane of my not-so-long life, something I hate to love and love to hate. And finally, for the first time I can remember (since I was little girl and got to watch Reagan's inauguration parade with my mom from a special booth and got a commemorative chocolate elephant, yum), I'm actually having fun with presidential election politics again.

Seriously, who isn't having fun with the election this year? Even if you are worried your "team" isn't going to win (and both teams have plenty to be worried about), surely everyone can agree it's been fascinating. I have to give McCain props for not picking someone dull as dishwater, and instead picked a VP who's shaken up not just the Republicans, but the whole election cycle as well. Who wins? Us the people, hoorah.

I think the greatest thing about watching the conventions, and reading the blogs, and watching the news, is realizing that political aficionados are just as dorky as, say, anime fans. It's comforting; I've long suspected that each highfalutin' group who looks down their noses at us have plenty of reasons to stop pointing and laughing. Cases in point:

Political junkies like their cosplay (hi Lincoln!),

dressing up in crazy outfits/headgear (or, um, not dressing up but totally looking like they are),

writing fanfiction (http://theanchoressonline.com/2008/09/07/the-humbling-the-one-goes-to-don-clinton/),

creating parody AMVs (or should I say PMVs?),

and being BarackRoll'd (http://hmatkin.blogspot.com/2008/09/john-mccain-gets-barackrolld.html. Also has a post on how they did it, excellent.)

And anime fans are the real freaks how?

Enjoy the evidence. And if you want me to post the political articles, blogs, etc. I find that stand out above the muck, let me know. I don't really want to turn my LJ into a political soapbox, though I keep getting closer and closer to a friend-locked politirant one of these days. But there are some gems out there, from sensible people, that help my sanity, and I'd love to spread the joy.

fanfiction, soapboxes, amv, cosplay, anime fans aren't the only wierd ones, politics
