WEEK OF PODFICIVERSARY (day six)

Aug 10, 2011 23:58

Okay, seriously. What is with all the porn I'm recording lately? I used to do...well, not gen exactly, because I was (still am) all about the John/Rodney shipping action, but...  Well, I think I remember that the stuff I recorded was funny, and quirky, and silly, and cracky, and NOT JUST ABOUT THE NAKED FUNTIMES. And now, it seems like all I ever read aloud anymore is "throbbing member" this and "licked his perineum" that and "bondage playtime" the other thing. I think I might actually miss the non-porn. Weird.

Anyway, tonight's installment for the Week Of Podficiversary is (you guessed it) porn. Specifically, more porn by helens78.

Let's get the warnings out of the way, huh: Hurts To Think About features bondage, past trauma, and painplay. If either of these kinks are not your kinks, you might feel a little bit better skipping over this one, and waiting 'til tomorrow for the Grand Finale Of Awesometastic Podficiversary Celebrations. It's not so much that this story is particularly and massively dirty, or porny, or kinky - though it is a PWP, so keep that in mind - but that Erik's characterization features heavily the depiction of his sexual desires, a great deal of which have been warped through past circumstances. Not to say that those who enjoy pain with their pleasure are warped - not what I'm trying ot say at all - but this Erik, the Erik of Hurts To Think About, might have been a perfectly average masochist in bed, were it not for certain influences during his developmental years, which have twisted him up inside in all sorts of sad and terrible ways. His "I like a bit of extra zing with my orgasm" responses get all snarled together with his "BAD BAD BAD DO NOT WANT" reactions to pain, and the whole tangle leaves Erik upset and unsatisfied. By focusing on Erik's desire for pain with his pleasure, and explicitly including it in several of the sex scene, helens78 gives us a brilliant new facet on the characterization of Mr. Lensherr - because, were you to spend your formative years in the hands of a man like Shaw, surely you'd get a little bit tweaked inside, too. And to see Erik in this light, dealing with an issue so very integral to his personality in such a way as to be both hot like burning and also competently handled, is a rare treat.

And then there's Charles, with his Amazing Powers Of Telepathy, and some creative (and also inappropriate) uses of said Powers. Charles' trust in Erik, too, is a bit of a kink of mine - that he can show such faith in his lover, even as Erik is wracked by self-doubt when it comes to his wants and needs and the fulfilling thereof, is amazing.

Hmmm. Apparently, Hurts To Think About isn't just a PWP after all - it's a compelling character study of two flawed individuals (Erik is conflicted, Charles is a nosy parker), seeking to make things a little bit better. Oh, dammit - I dunno if I'm explaining my thoughts on Hurts To Think About properly. So keep in mind, there's also a whole lot of sex.

Intro/Outro music is "Once In Your Life", as performed by Idlewild. That first section ("To come apart in mountain tops / is to come apart in rain /  Every note creates a picture / of a road worn over again / You speak only in memories / but what memories dictate / is if you don't know what you want / then what you want won't wait") seemed to me to reflect Erik's mindset throughout this fic exactly. He's not comfortable with what he wants, or how to get it, and past precedent implies that he won't like it when he gets it. But then in comes Charles, and his unique perspective on the world (and, in fact, certain aspects of affecting the world around him specific only to him), and suddenly Erik's opinions are changing ("And maybe a life waits over the hill / over the hill while I wait"). Feel free to come back and tell me what you think - does a differnet song fit theis story better? Was the musical integration acceptable, or irritating? Did you enjoy your listening experience? (ALSO! I was fooling around a little bit with the 'telepathy voice' settings in GarageBand. Let me know if they sound alright? Or, if you think I should stop messing around and leave the settings alone, tell me that, too. Thanks!)
