doctor whooooooo

Assume spoilers for the whole season, just to be safe!

Doctor Who, 7.03 (A Town Called Mercy)

So, I enjoyed this one, cos, y'know, IT'S DOCTOR WHO WITH MY MATT "HOTTIE" SMITH HELLOOOOO. But this one was a bit wobbly for me. I think because the last ep was very similiar in the war theme and so this one felt almost like a rerun. There's the bit of someone wanting "the doctor" turned out not to be Our Doctor, but a doctor. As well as someone pointing out to the Doctor that he's just like them, whether it be angry, full of hate, guilty, solitary, etc. (And the mention of Christmas again, though I would think that's more about paving the road for the Christmas special and the new Companion, than anything more thematic for the season.) Even the Doctor's gut reaction upon finding out what the bad guy had done: rid the universe of them. Which bring us to mirrors and how it's bad for the Doctor to travel alone. And he'd been with the Ponds! It's just those gaps between that are a bitch.

All that said, I think Matt did a truly wonderful job with all the emotional material. Especially the scene where the atrocities of war play out across his face and we see his expression get harder and darker and his eyes all but blaze. You can see him thinking, And I almost protected this man. Gave me shivers. Then later when he confronts Jex and yells and simmers and even later when you see him mentally come back to himself. Amazing! ♥ And the ep was all beautifully shot! Even if the townspeople looked reallyreally clean and healthy for an 1800s town--especially one that's been in lockdown with no supplies getting in, heh.

Amy: The Doctor was taking us to see the Day of the Dead festival.

This better not be foreshadowing, I swear. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO EVEN SAY THE WORD DEAD, AMY POND. D: Speaking of the Ponds, I love that they were with the Doctor at the start of the ep so we can assume they've already been on several adventures. There's even one very confused Louis VIII with Rory's phone charger as proof. Hee!

The one time the Doctor's cowboy hat would fit right in and he doesn't have it is weird, yo. Of course someone else tosses him one later, but still. Weird!

D: Tea. But the strong stuff--leave the bag in.

And with his added swagger walking in and the accent and toothpick antics and oh, show, consider me DELIGHTED. :D :D :D :D

Just me or does that barmaid look a lot like River? I kept waiting for Amy to acknowledge it, heh. Oh, and the barmaid made the Doctor laugh! I love when he gets to laugh! :D Speaking of the townspeople, that is one hot marshal. Nnng. Why you gotta die so soon? :(

I'm so confused why the town even asked the Doctor if he was a doctor and an alien IF THEY ALREADY KNEW WHO THE GUNSLINGER WANTED. Sloppy plot hole there. Though the Doctor's flustered "bit personal" reaction was adorkable. :X OH WAIT. Unless they thought another alien doctor would be good enough to appease the gunslinger and save their own? Hmn. And while we're on the subject of plot holes, WHO LETS A LITTLE GIRL GET UP AND WALK AROUND WHEN THEY'RE TRYING TO HIDE FROM THE SCARY DUDE WITH A GIANT GUN?!

Ahh, Jex knew the Doctor, as well as the gunslinger having him in his database. So I guess that answers the question of whether Oswin's info wipe went beyond the Daleks.

D: He shoots people's hats?
A: I think it was a warning shot.
D: Ah!

HEEEEE. ♥ Though you'd think that'd be obvious, so I'm guessing that somewhere out there is a race the Doctor's encountered that actually takes their revenge out on innocent hats. Otherwise the Doctor just comes off a little slow here. :P

D: I speak horse. His name's Susan and he wants you to respect his life choices.

I DIED. And then later, "Oi! Don't swear!" That was one feisty horse. :D AND HEY WE GOT THE DOCTOR ON A HORSE! I'M SO HAPPEH!

Jex asking Amy if she's a mother and her reaction made my heart hurt. It's interesting how much in common Jex had with both her and the Doctor. None of them are fully innocent, nor guilty.

The whole confrontation when the Doctor comes back and yells--YELLS!!!--for Jex to sit down and starts pacing and is so agitated he defaults to whatever Amy is saying and then grabbing Jex and hauling him outside and Amy fighting against it (mini!Doctor/fighter) and Rory fighting for it (healer/protector) and the Doctor actually going so far as to toss Jex outside the border AT GUNPOINT and then Amy stopping him and the way we can see the bright anger in his eyes temper back but not leave, just, just, omg. SO GOOD. Oh! And Amy accidentally firing the gun TWICE cracked me up, but not too sure how that'd happen unless she paused to re-cock it twice. 1800s guns aren't automatics. :P

A: See, this is what happens when you travel alone too long.

I love this quote so much and everything it implies, even as it makes me so sad to think of the Doctor traveling alone at all. Which reminds me. I was shocked the Doctor put the gun holster on. He's always so, "No guns!" So I'm guessing this is another "symptom" of his being alone too long? Would also explain why the Doctor has been so OMG KILL WHO REMINDS ME OF ME. Left alone, he gets too dark and caught up in guilt ("You don't get to chose when and how your debt is paid!") and starts doubting all the good he's done for the universe. Oh, Doctor. ♥

"...fella." Poor Rory. ;) At least later he gets to be part of the plan and gets the awesome line, "Yes, I know. I was there when we agreed it." OH RORY. ♥

D: Give me a Dalek any day.

OMG DID HE JUST REFERENCE OSWIN. I might be stretching it a bit, but I still like it. ;)

The undertaker that kept taking the Doctor's measurements lol.

The cyborg must've had some dust in his brain gears. Cos I'm still not sure how "try not to kill any innocents" became KILL DEM ALL AT NOON. He was willing to wait them out before the Doctor showed up, so, dude, what the heck? And I am surprised the cyborg just assumed Jex was actually dead. We know he was in his, er, egg when it went off, but for all anyone else knew, he could've set it to self-destruct and run off.

The little ending scene with the 18yo and the Doctor playing guns struck me as weird. The town's beloved marshal was just killed in front of them and then to make light of killing someone seemed way off. Actually the way guns were treated so casual, even comical, throughout an ep about war bothered me. I get the ep needed comic relief, but, yeah. Mixed messages there.

Again with the Ponds wanting to go home. I know the Doctor took it quite nicely (which supports my theory they'd been with him for awhile this last time out), but THIS IS VERY TRAUMATIZING TO ME, SHOW. But, hey, least we learned the Ponds have friends. :)

NEXT WEEK: Oh my god. A year with the Ponds! I CAN'T EVEN. OMG OMG OMG. It looks so amazing! AND BRIAN'S BACK. :D
