MAH SHOW IS BACK! \:D/
Assume spoilers for the whole season, just in case.
Doctor Who, 7.1 (Asylum of the Daleks)
Firstly: I know it's just how things are done, but I'm disappointed it's common knowledge that the Ponds are leaving and we already know who the replacement actress will be. Kinda takes the BIG surprise outta the season, y'know? And, yeah, I know the journey there is half the adventure, but still. Bummer.
Anyway!
THE DOCTOR. Looking tired, but I'm still so happy to seeeee you. "Don't be fair to the Daleks when they're firing me at a planet." HEE.
AMY. Superficially, the modeling thing still doesn't make sense to me. But it is something she can do that requires travelling all over, if she's trying to get that feeling of excitement she and Rory had with the Doctor. I loved that moment when she admitted to having missed the danger with a cheezer grin - she and John Watson need to have tea together one day. Wasn't there something awhile ago about Amy being a children's book author? Or did I make that up in my head when that little girl wanted her autograph in "Closing Time" and she was actually only a model? I think I made it up. Dammit. That woulda made more sense! A bunch of adventure stories with a little red-headed little girl time-traveling with her Raggedy Man.
RORY. Oh god, he broke my heart when he told Amy that he knew he loved her more than she did him. Then he made me lol with asking what color the Daleks were and being all, "Sorry, there weren't any good questions left." when the others gave him :| looks, and then trying to help the broken Dalek with his "eggs", omg, YOU DELIGHTFUL MAN.
THE DIVORCE. I get what Moffat was going for (delayed PTSD, etc), but the execution of it was pretty sloppy and rushed. Spending more that five minutes on such a serious issue between them woulda helped the WTF reaction I had.
THE DALEKS. The "Save us!" opener was pretty darned cool. And the Doctor's, "Well, this is new." Yes it was, lol. Also loved: "Hatred is beautiful. Perhaps that is why we have never been able to kill you." Oh, snap.
AND NOW THEY DON'T KNOW WHO THE DOCTOR IS. WUT. THAT IS AN AWESOME WAY TO REBOOT A SEASON. Of course, all the Daleks've really gotta do is download the info from someone/where else and they're back to hating him, but still was a fun OMGWTFBBQ moment. And now I'm super curious to see what the reprecussions of it are. Because you know there's gonna be some.
THE EYESTALK!DALEKS. So, they could be anyone and just pop out at any time, omg, I hope they show up later!
HARVEY & THE CORPSE!DALEKS. Very fun that he turned out to be dead. And v. creepy when the corpses stood up and started chasing them.
OSWIN. She was pretty darned adorkable. I mean, c'mon, this is a girl who was promised adventure travelling and then crash landed on her first trip out. A girl who spent the last year messing with her captor's infrastructure and making the prison planet even more hellish for them because there wasn't anything else to do. Well, aside from burning soufflés. ;)
At the same time, the only thing I went in spoiled for was that the actress is going to be the new Companion. So the 32974162 times her genius got mentioned was starting to srsly annoy, cos I kept thinking 'she's too Mary Sue, master hacker, knowing everything, flirting with everyone, everyone finding her funny and charming, saving the Doctor multiple times; this is going to get old quick'.
And then that surprise ending with her being a Dalek herself and insisting on her humanity was tragic and so good and it all made more sense.
Sidenote: I'm not sure I understand exactly what the Dalek did to her during the "full conversion". I mean, is it just her brain inside the metal shell? Her consciousness in the programming? She wouldn't be a squishy body though, right? Because that's what the Daleks look like after generations.
Anyway, am curious if she's the actual Companion, this specific Oswin we got to know, or not. She did say "remember me", all foreshadowy. Then again, she did blow up, heh. But she was in the 'net, so maybe she transferred herself up to the Dalek computer at the same time the Doctor and Co left. If she could somehow transfer her consciousness or whatever over to one of those android bodies from last season, that'd work. Then she could keep lounging in a chair, being quippy and hacker-y, and still, y'know, walk around planets.
Also, was that possibly her mom at the beginning or just a convenient story to get the Doctor?
THE ASYLUM. That ... was pretty anti-climatic? I expected horror and Daleky-anarchy and madness. Those crazy Daleks were pretty tame, dude. As in, most of them were asleep, heh. Though what they were doing at night was intriguing. And then never talked about again. Sigh. Oswin mentions they always come at night, but she didn't seem to have a memory of that, or at least never showed us. Also, the planet is protected by a forcefield so powerful Daleks can't get out... but apparently little ships can crash land through it, no problem. :|
IN CONCLUSION: Overall, weak plot was weak. But I'm so glad mah timey-wimey show is baaaack. Woot!
NEXT WEEK: I know there's dinos and all, but my first reaction was, Hey, that's Lestrade! :D
