Goat thoughts and breeding musings

Oct 01, 2013 12:23

I said in August that I wouldn't be breeding unless I got some kind of miracle of sales to get my herd numbers down. Well, I guess I got my sales miracle. Counting Cerryl's death and then selling six last week (Owen, Krys, Rex, Angelina, Chloe, Mona), I'm down to 18 goats*. I am expecting to gain two kids at Rhinebeck this month. And that's plenty for what's supposed to be a pretty heavy winter.

But! Kids come in the spring. I like the kids in the spring (minus the heart-stopping moments at the beginning). And I have a champion buck that I could either work to reproduce (Anna x Cookie) or breed to see if I could improve him (Ari x Ginger or Ari x Dahlia). At this point, any kids would be landing in March. And I have LOTS of hay to feed everyone... Argh! Anxiety of choice! I will likely be talking with Achaosofkittens this evening to hear his thoughts on the matter.
