In a compassionate and comprehensive move that illustrates how well they study the root causes of teenage homelessness, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland (Maine) has
demanded a refund of its charitable giving to a Portland homeless shelter. This is because the homeless shelter provided staff support to a state-wide homeless advocacy group which was involved in an anti-anti-homosexuality campaign ("No on 1") last fall. "No on 1" opposed a ballot proposal to overturn the new state law legalizing gay marriage. (Voters approved Question 1 on Nov. 3.)
If this triggers your outrage reflex, and you want to help cover this funding hole, go to
Preble Street and give them some love.
