Okay guys... I have a dilemma.
So, as most of you know, I have a POS car. At the moment, it is not running and, with school starting Monday, this is one hell of a problem. So, I have two options. I will list them below and my question is which you think I should choose. Thanks in advance!
1. Dale's brother, Dave, has a 1990 Chevrolet S-10 pickup in pristine shape. Probably less than 40k miles. Recent work: brakes, alternator. Tags are good - done about a year ago.
Pros: Room for profit - this thing is worth way more than I'd be paying for it, excellent shape, small, a/c, power steering, taken care of (very well) by a mechanic (Dave) since it was first purchased by him - that's right, original owner.
Cons: $2,800 investment, some kind of leak causing a little water to get in during one of the big storms last season.
2. My dad has a big Chevrolet pickup (not sure of year or make) that was recently in an accident. It's actually Marcella's car, her 'baby' as she calls it. They are getting some money from the settlement (accident money) and were planning on buying a bigger truck for the family cause this wont fit everyone. Marcella loves this thing so dang much, it's ridiculous. She said if it doesn't work to give it back to her - she'd rather have it sitting in her driveway than give it to anyone else.
Pros: Free. Brand new engine, Dad will fix the brakes and straighten the front end, safe (you know, big truck), good tags, oh - and did I mention it's free? Also, with the extra money, I'd be able to save and hopefully eventually buy a car I want.
Cons: Possible problems with the car? Marcella said she's never been stranded or anything, but it has way more mileage on it than Dave's. Harder to maneuver - being a big ass truck and all. I also feel bad taking away her 'baby' - as she put it. Time until availability (possibly 2 weeks or more) - having to make Marcella drive me around until it's ready - and we all know how much it sucks to not be able to do things on your own time. I really don't like dealing with this kind of shit in general, especially not during school.
When it comes down to it, I really don't know what to do. I'm torn between having a car I know wont fuck up and saving some money. I also don't want to hurt Marcella's feelings because she wouldn't (normally) just give up her truck - she doesn't even like it when my Dad drives it. So, what do you guys think? I tried to list good and bad about both sides and was as subjective as I could be.
