SO I was thinking today about what Don MIller said on Monday about advertising and how seeped we are in it. He said that there are two basic rules to advertising and selling your product. 1) Make your customer feel dissatisfied/unhappy/discontented. 2) Make them see how your product will make them feel happy/content/satisfied again. Really quite simple I guess. So I started looking thismorning and paying attention to all the adds that i encountered and what they were telling me about myself. I was told I was hungry, not sleeping well, fat, alone, and deserving of diamonds. And those are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head. Yikes. This seems pretty serious.
But how does one subvert the culture of entertainment and materialism???? THis is the pressing question because I'm all about subversion here. Perhaps I'll make all my Christmas presents...hmmm already know of things I want to give people that can't be made by me. I am trying not to buy any new clothes for the next year. That's one piece of subversion. Also I don't own a TV. That right there is a huge cultural no-no. SO it's a start but I feel like I can do more.
Awareness is a first step. Start paying attention to what the adds are telling you about yourself and choose to ignore it. It's all a big fat lie!
