Browsing through the comments of a
particularly short-sighted blog, somehow associated with NewScientist though I don't know why they would want their name on it, I came across a
short article on vertical farming. It's an interesting notion, this, essentially the bastard child of a greenhouse and a skyscraper, build inside a city. The benefits are certainly many, such as locally grown produce and cleaner air, not to mention the creation of jobs (organic greenhouses are very labor intensive), though I would certainly be more comfortable if at least a segment of these were run by
NPOs. Not necessarily government, mind you, but I would be leery of what might happen should there be a catastrophic failure of oil, and thus our ability to transport food into urban areas. Still, it's an idea worth considering.
