Sarah had initially assumed her first gallery opening was going to be a chance to frock up and hang out with the other members of the Goblin Kingdom’s art collective as they people watched at a distance. It was definitely that and Cressida had been delightfully entertaining as she filled her in on the guests she recognised by name as well as those she was completely unfamiliar with.
As the gathering wound down and the moneyed guests drifted off to wherever the obscenely wealthy went when not posturing before their peers, Sarah was expecting that they would all transport back Underground. She was a little surprised that the moment the gallery doors closed, her people descended from their private mezzanine soirée to view the exhibition at their leisure.
Jareth handed her another small bowl of ice cream and watched in delight as Sarah got to see the collection displayed to its best advantage.
It was definitely a much lighter atmosphere and while Sarah had seen most of the collection in the castle gallery before it had been installed for the opening Above, she was enjoying the chance to see everyone’s work in a different context. The artwork had taken on a more serious tone and Sarah could see how it generated so much money for what the artists saw as a way of relaxing.
Seeing the stickered title card beside one of Jareth’s paintings, Sarah blanched at the price it commanded, shocked that the woman who had bought it had treated that amount of money as frivolous.
She walked the perimeter, before working her way in towards the sculptures that were displayed in the centre of the room, moving around the pillars and tables that showcased the bronzes that were a collaboration of several of the artists.
Saving the ceramics for last, Sarah was unprepared to see an installation of her work. They were tiles that she’d worked on with Bishop for a commission, but they were ones that she’d messed up the glaze on after a long day. She thought they’d been recycled, but Bishop had rescued the pieces and raku fired them, giving them a riotous metallic finish with a crazed surface.
“They’re beautiful,” Jareth’s lips brushed her ear. “Almost as beautiful as you, my love.”
Sarah turned to look at him, when the title card caught her eye with a bright sticker indicating that her work had been purchased. Leaning down to look, she gasped at the price that was listed. “I don’t know whether to be excited or shocked that someone just paid that amount of money for a mistake.”
Jareth shrugged and pulled her close. “As long as they see the worth in it and enjoy it, who are we to say otherwise.”
Relaxing into Jareth’s side, Sarah looked around her at the amazing art. If something that brought her people enjoyment to create, made someone Above happy to own and brought the Goblin Kingdom a supplemental income, she was definitely not going to argue.
