TM 203: Intrigue

I loved falcons before Redwing, but Redwing was the first falcon that loved me back.

It's not like a dog or a cat, usually, and I had to admit, that was part of the appeal. That and the flying--I'd always liked birds, after all. Most falcons and hawks aren't social creatures: they don't have the ability or the interest in showing either affection or submission.

When they come back to you, it's quite clearly because they think it's in their interests to do so, because they can get food that way.

But with Redwing, it was different, even though neither of us knew how or why. It developed very gradually--at the beginning, it just seemed like a very lucky pairing of an trained falcon and an enthusiastic amateur falconer. Who, soon enough, met a certain patriotic superhero and started fighting crime. It was intriguing how much Redwing liked that: after all, criminals aren't edible. But he was a hunter, after all, and it certainly seemed fun for us both.

I could hear his feelings even then, but I didn't notice it much, as such. And Redwing didn't think about it at all, or bother about the fact that he was starting to enjoy things *because* I did. And then the Red Skull claimed credit for *both* my partnerships, with Redwing and with Steve. After that, I didn't really *want* to think about the reason for our bond; I was just glad it was there.

I still am. Even though sometimes I worry about how much I've changed Redwing's brain over the years: he's clearly *not* the falcon he used to be, not like anything that exists in the wild anymore.

Not that he cares about anything like that. So I don't worry too much about it either: what's done is done, and I don't want to lose him.
