Mold is a serious health hazard! I'm surprised your landlord has been able to ignore that one for so long. Mold and mildew are really dangerous, and if it's in the walls then that means there's probably some decay going on, and that needs to be taken care of properly, not just cleaned away from view on the surface. We had mildew problems in our only bathroom when we moved in and it took the landlord about 3 years to finally renovate it for us (after many complaints about the mildew smell and mold). When he finally did, he told us that it was so rotted away underneath that the tub was literally balancing on a single beam and "could have gone at any time". Yes, because dying naked in a bathtub fallen through the floor is exactly how I always hoped it would happen >=/
Good idea to keep proof of damages not being yours. Landlords can be sneaky. I had a previous one try to charge us for repairs to the window screens citing our cats as clawing it, but we NEVER opened those windows because we had an air conditioner in. Thankfully we documented and photographed all damages when we moved in, so they couldn't force it on us.
I'm really sorry this is stressing everyone out and not getting resolved. I hope you guys can find a nicer place to live in and have that office space for you and Carvis that you want.
We know the mold is a serious problem especially since Mouse is allergic to it. So we will be demanding that get handled, properly.
If we still haven't heard back from the maintenance man or the property management people by the end of day tomorrow we'll be letting the rentalsman know. We were thinking of sending a followup email anyway and attaching the email with the list of repairs. Just so that they also have a record of what we're asking to get fixed.
Out of curiosity and because of what we've been overhearing about the rent, we checked the website of the property management people for the listing of the unit above us. To our surprise, not only did they reduce the price, it's now lower than our rent. That information will be included with the email tomorrow. I doubt we can ask for a rent reduction ourselves but we'll see what the rentalsman has to say.
We have pictures of when we first moved in and will be taking more before we turn over the keys. We're not going to get charged for something we didn't do.
We also have the invoice for the new sink fixture we had to get for the kitchen. It wasn't much but we'll have that to show we've made the apartment better.
