Movie Rec - IRON MAN

Had a chance to do some movie watching...

The whole concept and story behind Iron man has never really grabbed me. I've ascertained that I have more of an affinity for superheroes with less mortal origins. Hellboy fascinates me and the Silver Surfer is also intriguing. BUT...that said I went to this film based simply on good reviews and comments from people I know who had seen it. Perhaps the lack of any expectations helped but this movie thoroughly entertained me for nearly two hours. I must admit I love very cool special effects and I love techno gadgetry in it's highest art form. This undoubtedly helped with the entertainment factor. However that said I thought the performances were also solid from a well casted group. Jeff Bridges played a very smooth villain and for some reason the bald factor had me thinking about other potentially evil bald villains. His voice though is so distinctive and I will always think of 'The Dude' from The Big Lebowski whenever I hear it. Robert Downey Jr - this was an unusually strong choice I think. He was obvious for the part of the smooth multi millionaire weapons designer spoilt genius playboy but he did also pull off a redemptive characterisation quite believably I thought and appropriately ruthless when required. The rapport between his character and Gwyneth's was good, not sappy, schmaltzy or entirely too predictable in any way. I enjoyed their dialogue together. I've decided I'd like a 'Jarvis' for my house too....along with the very helpful robot entities that assisted in the building of the suit.
The suit was cool and the testing of it was fun to watch. It would be interesting to see what Bruce and Tony could do if they put their heads together.
All in all I'd recommend this movie as worth the ticket price and a couple hours of your time. There doesn't seem to be too many movies coming out that you can say that about these days.
