So.
-Firstly, I enjoyed this episode SO MUCH MORE than TEH and TBB.
-This was really the first time I watched Eleven and thought, "Oh, of COURSE he's the Doctor!" He finally got in the skin of the role for me, and it was rad
-The other thing about this episode for me is a lot harder to explain, but I'll try.
TEH and TBB really irritated me because I felt like it was so much stuff we'd seen before. Only these scripts weren't as good, and much as I loved watching Amy and The Doctor, the scripts they were given weren't up to the task of improving upon already-trod ground.
But now that Amy has no idea what a Dalek is?
SOMETHING IS AFOOT.
See, I knew the retreading was a choice, but now it's obvious it's a choice FOR REASONS ENTIRELY OTHER than what I thought. I thought it was Moff lifting his leg on old plot points and saying, "THAT'S MINE. AND THAT'S MINE. ALL OF THIS IS MINE*."
But no, now we're in some different time where no one remembers the Daleks stealing the planet and terrorizing everyone.
I said in a comment over in
bodlon's journal, "We keep getting "It was 5min/6 months/12 years/14 years," BUT WE DON'T KNOW when the starting point was. Our only clues are Rory's ID badge that says it was issued in 1990 (wtf?), and then 2010 tech."
So we don't know what year it is. We don't know what universe we're in. All we know is that this little girl had 14 years of knowing the Doctor, but we don't know what year it was when she met him. Also, if there is fuckery afoot, what's with the technology we've seen (mobile phones, laptops, etc) being 2010 relevant? HMM!
-Also, nothing will be funnier to me than Churchill saying "Narzis." My mother used to joke about "Narzi bastards" all the time, so I never thought I'd hear that word ever again, let alone on Doctor Who.
-Also also, Churchill was such a fanboy of the Doctor, it was adorable. It was also pretty clear that the feeling was mutual. AWWW! BROS!!
-I'm not so keen on Amy using LURRRRVE to defuse the "bomb," but she was hilarious and cheeky when she called out Churchill for stealing the TARDIS key. I also really enjoyed Churchill treating her like a human being, and not just some girl.
-Did you notice the Bad Wolf/Heart of the TARDIS music when Amy had her lurve monologue? HMM WTF Y'ALL.
-I remain ambivalent about River Song, but I'm interested to see her next week and OMG WEEPING ANGELS YAY.
*Except that bit. I don't want that bit. BUT ALL THE REST OF THIS IS MINE.
