HUGE TRADE OMGZORZ!!!

So, apparently...

The Sox just acquired Adam Laroche from the Pirates.

The rumored haul is single A pitcher Yeiper Castillo and a PTBNL. Sounds like a textbook salary dump. I'm not in love with it and expect Laroche to have a short life here, but hey, if we're not giving up anything of value I guess it's worth a shot?

ETA: Castillo was apparently not ( Read more... )

Aw, this makes me sad. Just 'cause I liked the idea of the LaRoches playing together.

I know! I feel like they can't be split up now for some reason.

This trade doesn't make a ton of sense, unless they're really counting on LaRoche having a great 2nd half and Lowell to get hurt again - then again, they may not be done dealing.

In another note - if the Orioles play half as shitty as they're playing against the Yankees this week, a 3-game series against them will be just what the doctor ordered.

I like Mike Lowell a lot for what he's done (WSMVP '07, etc.), but this year he's been terrible in the field (-8.2 UZR, 3rd to last in all of baseball) and getting worse with the bat - he's at 101 OPS+ right now but I don't see that improving in the second half with the re-aggravated hip injury.

And it continues to be just a great few days for Pittsburgh sports fans. The Pirates can't even afford to pay their MEDIOCRE players, let alone great ones...

That's okay. We clearly have no needs for a excellent defensive shortstop.

But, yeah, Diaz was hitting .250 in the minors with no home runs, so his bat will probably never strong enough to be a major league starter. I don't even think I've HEARD of this Strickland guide, not even a blurb in "Boston Baseball."

Bill Simmons once wrote that one of the reasons he liked fantasy sports were the random trades done for the heck of it, how he wanted Theo Epstein announcing a trade and then ending it with "I have absolutely no idea why we just did this."

If there ever was a time to break that out...

Um, he's better than Kotsay and can platoon with Lowell? Seems reason enough to me.

Man, remember those Francour to the Red Sox rumors? Man was that a frightening idea... I was so glad when they eventually swapped him with the Mets for Ryan Church, I've never been so relieved at a Nationa League only trade in all of my life
