Terry Francona announced today that Mike Lowell will have surgery on his right hip Monday in New York, ending his season.
Lowell, who has been bothered by a torn labrum in his hip for months and aggravated it mid-September, was taken off the Division Series roster before Game 4 last Monday.
Dr. Bryan Kelly, who is the assistant team physician for the Giants, will perform the surgery. Kelly reviewed Lowell's hip MRI late last month. By having the surgery now, Lowell gives himself the maximum time to be ready for spring training next February. Lowell may also have bone spurs in the hip shaved down, which could increase the rehab time.
On the field, Jacoby Ellsbury is not in the lineup and J.D. Drew hits leadoff against Andy Sonnanstine. Coco Crisp bats seventh and Jed Lowrie hits ninth.
