Red Sox In Lead For Santana?

That's what Twins writer, Charlie Walters is saying. Until now, I haven't let myself get excited about the possibility of Santana. Walters had the inside scoop on the Delmon Young/Matt Garza deal previously.

While it's not a glut; to the best of my knowledge, we're much better stocked to give up positional players than the Yankees are right now.

When Cashman did his little rebuilding project, he remembered that pitching wins championships, but he seems to have forgotten that you need fielders behind him.

Looking at the Sox' current contract statuses, Left Field is the only starting position that's not locked up until 2010 or beyond. That's about a full draft class away, discounting guys in the early phases of development we've got right now. If we were to make a trade along those lines, it'd be relatively painless for anyone but the sentimental. Coco's been pushed out by Ells, most people would choose Buchholz over Lester, Lowrie is blocked by Lugo for the time being and by the time Lugo's either gone or tradeable, something else will be available via trade/free agency OR Tejeda could progress as projected and Masterson.

Making this trade wouldn't deplete the farm in either category. The staff has done a good job of balancing things out. Of the top twenty prospects according to soxprospects.com, 11 are position players and 9 are pitchers.
