This is an amazing macro. I will now watch it instead of finishing homework.

Question: How easy do you find learning sign language, compared to whatever languages you've taken in the past?

It's easier for me, but I've always had trouble with spoken language so it might be a personal thing. I would say that it's probably a bit easier overall because there seems to be less vocabulary. It was only really codified as a language in the 1800s, so perhaps it just hasn't had time to develop the bucket o' synonyms that, say, English has. Plus in ASL you can always just fall back to fingerspelling (and a lot of short words don't even have signs because they're relatively easy to fingerspell) so the need for a vocabulary of signs is less urgent.
Anyway, I really, really enjoy it. It helps that I live in a city with a large deaf population - and what is apparently the largest population of gay deaf people. I totally go to (extracirricular) sign language classes at a gay bar, it is awesome.

ASL fascinates me. Gretchen tried to teach me a few years back, so I have a few words beyond fingerspelling. Why did you decide to start?

Have you read Mean Little deaf Queer, by Terry Galloway? It seems to me that the deaf queer population has a stronger community than basically any other queer subgroup, though I may just be making that up. I wonder whether that holds true for "queer" as subgroup of deaf.
