Let's Talk About Death & Sex, Baby
Just came back from an ordinary lamb chop dinner at the grandparents' crib, who live right across the street from my parents. Things went pretty much as expected.
My grandfather is a remarkably tall and robust old bastard, a very self-centered retired college professor with a gruff exterior. He recently kicked a lifelong drug and alcohol addiction, which is totally great, but all the years of boozing and pill swilling have left him in a very batty state. Combine that with the fact that he is a raging manic-depressive and you have one difficult person to deal with. He's contstantly musing about the shadow of death and the folly of youth, the evils of rock-n-roll music and tattoos, the inferiority of computers to novels-- basically a a pre-established playlist of grumpy old rants. But I think at least a small part of him his trying now to be conversational, and to be attentive, or at the very least to mix up the playlist a little bit more. All in all he hasn't been a terrible grandfather, but he was a pretty shitty dad to my mother and her siblings.
I feel bad for my grandmother; she's one of the kindest, most civil and polite people who's ever lived. It's a daily struggle for her to deal with this loon who blurts out insensitive observations and forgets just about every name, place and event that doesn't affect him directly.
Old age isn't painting the happiest picture for my future. If I take after my dad's side I'll be cancer-rotted and worm-infested by my late sixties, and if mom's side is the way to go then I'm gonna live a super-long life, yet be completely out of my marbles (and hair) by the time the reaper finally comes for me.
