You know those Harry Potter fics that take you places? Take you out of the English wizarding world and into a completely foreign land? I completely enjoy those. Because I get to ‘go along’ with the characters and ‘see’ the sights they do and feel like I’ve gone somewhere else entirely, just sitting in front of the computer. Because I can often tell that the author took some sheer joy, incorporating a country’s spirit and character into the narrator’s viewpoint. And an enthusiastic and skilled author is always awesome to find .
I love, love these ‘travelogue fics’, as I like to call ‘em. (Hmm. I think it’s true what they say, about all Saggitarians having a bit of wanderlust in them.)
But at the same time, when I read reviews for them, I feel a bit lonely. The readers go ‘Oh my goodness, you really captured the heart of Sicily’ or ‘Hah, that is such a New York thing to do, my girlfriend and I did that on our first date!’or ‘this really shows how utterly French she is, believe me, I know’ or ‘I live in Australia and it’s exactly like that’ and I just sit back and wish I could feel that way about a fic one day.

osmalic Summary: In the land with no identity, Ronald Weasley is looking for something
The yay part of this post:
Ron Weasley in the Philippines! Ron Weasley, on a vision quest, in my home country!
I have got to show this to my little brother, ‘cause I distinctly remember an hours-long conversation we had about what Filipino wizards might be like(we are both dorks who can have lengthy conversations about fictional things.)
Ron in Manila, the city that my family permanently moved into when I was 14, the city that I still have a love/hate relationship with! And he found it ugly-beautiful and that’s just absolutely correct.
And HEE, Ron drinking with aswangs. A favorite book character of mine interacting with a childhood nightmare figure of mine-just reading that makes my day.
Most of all, Jose Rizal is mentioned...and then compared to Harry Potter himself. LOVE. I’ve just finished taking a Jose Rizal course by a brilliant professor and have pretty much decided that in the afterlife, he’s the second(Anne Frank will always be the first.)historical figure I want to meet
The rec part of this post:
War-weary, soul-searching Ron is my sort of thing-I’m not sure why. I adore Ron’s humor and his spirit, but for some reason, I also like to see what happens when they are unwillingly extinguished and he struggles to get them back. I love how the author weaves in his desire for an identity apart from Harry’s legend, into this quest of his.
It’s not the most smoothly-written HP fic I’ve ever read, the tenses are confusing sometimes. However, it is visibly written with love; and it has so much heart; and I think that is crucial in any Ron-fic.
Speaking of hearts, it is also quietly heart-wrenching-there’s always a sadness, a sense of tragedy that builds and builds, and the reason for that is carefully revealed. And then at the same time, there is always this lingering hope.
Go read!
