Here's my favourite picture of the week, chanced upon during an otherwise uninspiring bout of work-related research:
But who are they and what on earth are they doing? Can you guess the answer, viewers?
Poll The Basket-on-the-Bonce mystery And the correct answer is... *drumroll*...
...answer number four: they are daredevil aviators. In fact, they are
Auguste Piccard (on the right) and Paul Kipfer (on the left), and they made the first
manned balloon flight into the stratosphere in 1931. And yes, the cushion-plus-basket headgear was their own improvised version of a crash helmet. Bless them and their padded little heads!
Extra bonus facts: the character of
Professor Calculus in the Tintin books was modelled on Auguste Piccard, AND Jean-Luc Picard is named after him (well, him and his equally daredevil brother
Jean). So basically, Auguste wouldn't care if you laugh at his hat, because his general awesomeness is a matter of public record. QED!
