Families are sometimes liket that. For the most part my family is great. But I had the grandmother issues as well. It was my dad's mother. She was way hardcore catholic. I remember when I was like 12 or 13 and had my long "skater bangs" type haircut she would constantly tell me it was too long and that she was going to cut it. Lmao, I was like "Tough luck grandma". We argued for a year or two about my taste in fashion and music and so on. Then she realized she couldnt push me around and I wasnt going to change just because she wanted me to.
So she stopped hassling me about stuff like that. Which was cool, since then we could go on to just getting along again. So by the time I hit highschool and had really long hair and was generally more eccentric she didnt bother me about it since we had already been through it.
As far as being hurt by it, I wouldn't really bother too much with that. Its just a fact of life that some choices people make are not going to be accepted by others. Don't waste time thinking about it. Its going to happen. While they are free to voice their opinion, you are just as free to ignore it.
I would basically tell her that the choices you make are what makes you happy (heh, hopefully thats the case :) ). Hopefully she can understand that.
