What am I reading? So much fanfic, but I did actually managed to finish a book this week. A short book, true, but a book none the less.
What I Just Finished
Jhereg by Steven Brust. Thanks to
sholio and her recent review of the entire Taltos series, I've decided to shun my massive backlog of unread books and re-read this series. Its wild to me that it was a) written the year after I was born and b) Vlad, the main character, is only 21 or 22 for most of the story. Like, in retrospect, knowing he's that age makes some of his anger and recklessness make sense, but wow, he's managed to cram a lot of sarcasm, responsibility, and shared personal history with people in his lifetime. Anyway, the book is fun and it's a nice introduction to the world. It's basically an episode of Leverage only the goal of the heist is murder and everyone's, like, 3 time more morally gray, than anyone on that show. Like, everyone, even Vlad's psychic pet, is a complete asshole but in, like, a fun way. If you like your anti-heroes, I would hardily recommend.
Talks To My Patients by Dr. Rachel Gleason, 1882. I read this for a project I'm doing for work. It was written by a local author based on a series of lectures she gave to women about women's health. It includes some hilarious tidbits like the idea that reading romantic novels can bring on menses and that using birth control can trick the female body into the habit of not getting pregnant even once they've stopped using it. It also had some halfway decent advice on stopping post-partum bleeding and really frank discussions about symptoms associated with pregnancy, menopause, and old-fashioned endometriosis.
What I'm Reading Next
Yendi, a.k.a. the next book in the series. The whole thing is written out of chronological order, so, if I'm remembering correctly, this is the one where he meets the wife he's already married to in book one. I have an omnibus that includes the first three novels, so my current plan is to finish with that and decide whether I want to do the next one. As it turns out, there have been a couple more books since the last time I checked, so I should probably acquire those at some point.
