I have gotten so bad about reading actual books these days. Where once I could zip through a really good book in a matter of days, it now takes me weeks to make it through even books which I enjoy. WTF self? How did this happen? Whatever. On to the book review!
What I just finished
The Future of Another Timeline by Annalee Newitz. In a world were ancient time machines that pretty much anyone can use are a thing, a secret group of feminist travelers known as the Daughters of Harriet are in a brutal edit war with a group of men determined to enslave female reproduction. The book has it all: the 1990s punk music scene; the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair; Anthony Comstock; murder; overcoming childhood abuse; feminist alt history; ancient cults; trips to the Ordovician; and so many interesting discussions of historical theory. It's a pretty wild ride about the nature of social change and the way little changes can have big results and vice versa. Immediately after reading it, I went out and bought this and the author's other work for my friend for Christmas, so that should tell you something about the quality.
What I'm reading next
My friend got me a neat sounding YA novel for my birthday, but instead I will be reading The Immortal Valley by Liz Gables because she's paying me to read and edit it by Christmas. I'm 5 chapters in so far, but I have a lot more reading/editing to go.
