Well, it's official. After a few trial meetings, Len has decided to join
Civil Air Patrol, which as you might expect from its name, is the civilian branch of the Air Force. He is one of the youngest in his squadron (he's 12), and he's not currently in great shape although we expect that to change with the physical training he will be getting. And they were really nice about it - they didn't say we can't use you, or you can't make it here. They said, with a smile, "Don't worry, we'll get you there!"
It seems like a great group and it will give him a chance to learn aerospace science, leadership skills, and EMT skills. He may even get to participate in rescues or help out in times of disaster.
For anyone curious, Len currently has no plans to make a career in the military, and CAP incurs no obligation to serve in the military. It is just what it says it is. So we're giving it a shot. :)
