From Queen of Swords:
“Sit, sit.”
Climbing onto the bed, she sat across from Louisie. “Did you want me to do a reading?”
“Heavens no, girl, I’m going to do a reading for you.”
Ophelia shifted uncomfortably, retucking the towel tighter around her. “Thank you, but no.” She’d never had her reading done by anyone but herself and her family. The thought of someone else telling her about her life sent fear curling along her spine, raising the small hairs in its wake.
Louisie reached out and unerringly rapped Ophelia on the top of the head. “Didn’t your mother teach you any manners, girl? Don’t argue with your elders.” Before Ophelia could do just that, Louisie shoved the cards into her hands. “Cut them.”
A tingle started in her palm before spreading outward, up her arm. What the hells? Ophelia shivered and quickly cut the cards, handing them back. She fought the urge to wipe her hands on her towel as she watched Louisie go still.
The old woman flipped a card without even asking Ophelia what she wanted known. “Ah, the Lovers. You have been a busy girl, haven’t you?”
Ophelia looked at the card, trying not to notice how familiar the two Lovers looked, how their dark hair and pale limbs intertwined so beautifully. A name, a memory, echoed through her thoughts.
Louisie flipped over another card and laughed. “The King of Swords. Oh girl, you have been busy. This one will keep you on your toes, he will.”
The echo got louder, bringing a too-familiar face with it. Ophelia shook her head, trying to clear it.
“And now for the last card.” Louisie held it up. The Ace of Swords. Instead of setting it next to the others, she used her free hand to tap Ophelia on the forehead. “Ultimate truth. Remember, girl, remember.”
