Comics Wednesday - Mad Hatter II
Okay, so in the last one-shot concerning the Mad Hatter, we got a look at Calie's uncle and how he got into Wonderland and took over the Mad Hatter bit. But, you see, he wasn't the first Mad Hatter (nor the last, since Johnny took over his spot). So this one-shot concerns the first (or at least one of them).
As you've probably noticed, I'm not generally crazy about the one-shots in the Wonderland series. They always seem to leave me dissatisfied for one reason or another. Not so with this one. Here we see a man (John) wash up on shore in Wonderland. A chick ("Lizze Bo ... I mean, Elizabeth") runs out, being chased by the Cheshire Cat. This dude freaking sticks out the CC's eye and drives it off!
They, of course, fall for each other and start making a life together. Meanwhile, the Queen of Hearts sees him, is intrigued by him, and so she takes them captive. At this point we get a bit of history on exactly WHO John was in the real world. See, the hat sort of gave it away (*coughJacktheRippercough*). So he uses his crazy cutting skills to escape (very Mad Hatter style) and runs up just in time to see his dearest Elizabeth torn in half by the jabberwocky and reborn as one of the freaky flower women. So then he takes off, vowing revenge on every one of them (there WILL be another one-shot - Hatter Versus the Queen of Hearts).
Now, this intrigued me for a variety of reasons. One, I LOVE both the Queen of Hearts and the Mad Hatter (although they do freak me out in Zenescope's incarnation). Two, the whole idea that Wonderland drives normal people into crazy, butchering psychos but leaves the "real" butchering psychos "sane." Basically, I just can't wait to see where this goes. 8/10
