34956 / 65000 words. 54% done!

You see that beautiful beastie above? That's PTWT, over halfway done. Yeah! I was having some serious issues getting back into it after my vacation, but now the flow has returned. And Very Interesting and Unexpected Things keep happening. Like, HOLY CRAP BATMAN! Ahem. Yes. I'm having a blast. Can you tell?

23. Magic to the Bone by Devon Monk

I found the premise regarding magic really intriguing. Sure, anyone can use magic, but it always takes something in return. For Allison Beckstrom, this cost is especially high - her memories.

The book was good, the plot consistently pulling my forward, the characters all really good ... I just wasn't in love with Allie. I think a large portion of my discontent comes from the way that the book ended. I'm not going to give away that large of spoiler ... but it kind of annoyed me.

I did, however, thoroughly enjoy Zayvion (what a freaking fantastic name). He's very mysterious and a good leading guy. It was so refreshing to find a story without the typical Alpha male running around (and magically turning submissive after he "falls in love"). Not that Zayvion was a pushover - he wasn't. 6/10

I'd been circling these comics for a long time. I even tried to buy them once through Amazon (only to find that the wait for 1-3 MONTHS - *rolls eyes*). So when I found them through tfaw.com, I was determined to finally read them.

And, yeah, TOTALLY WORTH THE WAIT.

First of all, you have to take these with a pinch of salt. The main character, Empowered, has a suit from which her powers originate. The only problem is that the suit is very easy to tear (which makes her lose her powers). And she's kind of a crappy super hero, to boot. So she's always tied up and half naked.

But as soon as I started reading, I fell in love with this character. She's got body issues, self esteem issues, and ... well, issues. But she doesn't stop trying to save the day. And then she meets Thug Boy (coincidentally, while being taken hostage and tied up) and they fall for each other.

I have to say, I've never seen a relationship quite like this in comics before (that could just be my limited reading) but they're SO GOOD together. He builds her up and is probably the Best Boyfriend Ever. He's also got a closetfull of secrets (not in the least being a supervillian who likes to rape people's eye sockets out to get him - haven't seen much more than dreams at this point but I am VERY CURIOUS to see where THAT goes).

And then we meet Ninjette, who becomes Empowered's best friend. Ninjette is (duh) an ninja ... with a drinking problem. And, yeah, she's got issues too. Like the band of other ninjas who are going to (probably in the third volume) come and kick her butt.

Basically, what makes this comic so amazing are the purely human relationships and characters that Adam Warren has created. It's amazing and I'm completely addicted. I was kicking myself for not having bought volumes 3-5 immediately (a fact which I quickly corrected). Yeah, I'm in LOVE! 10/10
