expo excursion

was at the singapore expo this afternoon to check out the asian pacific food expo and the wine for asia exhibition going on at adjacent halls and it seemed like half of singapore was there too (so this is where singaporeans go when they are not shopping in orchard). bumped into ch taking a break from wine-sampling at the food expo all gregarious and high on alcohol who immediately gave us an incredulous, "why are you here? do you know what's going on at the next hall (i.e.: wine for asia)???". what to do? being a foodie, i had different priorities *grins*. as has been the case since i was born, i still can't handle alcohol in large quantities. the amounts they were pouring out for sampling today were too much for me so ended up pouring away a lot of it (wine is wasted on she who downs it in sipfuls!), but i did get to try some stuff that i rather liked (first, the zesty bright yellow limoncello liquer, then some white wine called "angel light" from the austwine booth and later some bubbly from here) so now i am very tempted to make home-made limoncello using the recipe from NYT (italics my own):

12 lemons
1 750-milliliter bottle good vodka [pray tell, what would be good vodka?]
½ cup sugar

1. Finely grate the zest of the lemons. In a large jar, combine the zest and the vodka. Seal tightly and place in a cool, dark place for 2 weeks.

2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, dissolve the sugar in 1/2 cup water. Let cool.

3. Using a sieve lined with cheesecloth, set over a bowl, strain the vodka mixture. Stir the sugar syrup into it. Use a funnel to pour into a 1-liter bottle and seal. Place in a cool, dark place for 1 week, then chill in the freezer until ready to serve. Serves 1, or many [which means one could consume a litre of limoncello in one sitting???? *amused*].

also popped into the gracious living exhibition but we exited rather quickly when salesman after salesman kept pestering us with "what kind of house do you have?"-like questions even though we just wanted to look at furniture and home designs for fun. boo. next time, we will just go to ikea for hassle-free furniture window shopping.
was really grateful to have the car today ... it brought us places: we got to drive down the whole length of changi coast road on the way from expo to changi village and watch planes land and take off. how to do such things without a car?
