Finished Good Omens.
Now it's a pretty good book, and it had me laughing out loud a few times (the first book in quite a while to accomplish this feat), but it was not the book people on various websites have built it up to be.
But I think I know why.
The simple answer: Among some groups, it's cool to bash religion, and they see the (actually quite mild, considering) religious criticism in this book as something great/amazing/rebellious/etc./etc./etc.
Yeah...so what.
As far as I'm concerned, it's a pretty entertaining book (and what else is a novel for but to entertain the reader...?), but that's about it. It's not really that great, it's not amazing in any way, really. But if there's one thing you can trust the legions of pseudo-intellectuals to do, it's throwing their support blindly behind anything that criticizes whatever they see as mainstream, from the current political party to religion (especially Christianity) to the US to, well, anything at all.
Whatever. It was a good book and I enjoyed it, and that's all that matters.
