I saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier yesterday, and I know already a lot of great meta criticism and analysis has been written about the movie and its themes, so this isn't that. This isn't even spoiler-y. I know! Can you believe it?
Honestly though, if you're even mildly into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and you haven't seen this movie (assuming it's showing where you live), I feel I should ask 'why not'? Because this is a great movie, first and foremost, and it's the best Marvel movie, hands down. The acting is superior, the writing surprisingly well done, and the characterization of these incredible folks--just awesome! I really can't recommend it highly enough.
Black Widow is Natasha here, a real person, a woman with issues and a past that we still don't see, but in this instance it feels natural to her character and personality to hide herself away deep inside. The glimpses are more than enough. She's not just a badass, and it's so intriguing to see those layers slowly peeling back.
Nick Fury is also fleshed out more (in both senses of the word), and Sam Jackson blew me away. Again, Marvel knows its characters and its actors, and finally this guy really has something to work with in this franchise.
Anthony Mackie is the perfect Sam Wilson. He's the wingman who often outshines the star, and Falcon himself is written like a dream! Man, I hope they have him on standby because I personally want Falcon in every single MCU from now on. He's a breath of fresh air.
I think they tailor-made Robert Redford's role for him. It fits like bespoke. Fucking nailed it!
Chris Evans, though, and Sebastian Stan? I can't say enough how impressive these guys are in this movie. Their characters are reflections of each other, two soldiers on opposite sides, the shiny and the tarnished, the man and the machine--I could go on for days! Definitely some of each actor's best work, too. Chilling and heartbreaking, every time they're onscreen alone the echo of the other lingers in the background.
So, to summarize, Cap 2 is something you should see (and see again). It's a superhero action flick that's an intricate political thriller with cutting-edge social commentary and real-world issues dressed up in comics lore, a tearjerker and fish-out-of-water drama and buddy movie and soldier film all in one. Please go see it (and,
roxymissrose, I'm looking at you here). I don't think you'll regret it.
