since posting my
want to start a virtual community garden entry, i've been spending a lot of time at garden centers and nurseries. i have also figured out that a lot more of my balcony space gets direct sunlight than i previously thought. as a result, i'm now planning to grow herbs on my front balcony space (which gets morning/early afternoon) sunlight, and use my two rear-facing balconies (which get afternoon sunlight) for vegetables and strawberries.
today i found expandable window box hangers at home depot. i bought two, plus a couple of thirty-inch planters, just to try out. they fit over my balcony railings perfectly! tomorrow i'm going to buy a half-dozen more. on friday i'll buy soil and plants: strawberries, herbs, lettuce, spinach? i don't know. that's what i'm thinking at this point.
on a completely unrelated note, while i'm planning my garden, i'm also thinking about bailing on the bay area. the truth is i'm having trouble finding a job in california. in the meantime, i've been offered work in chicago, new york and virginia/DC. so, guess what? i'm actually starting to think about job hunting on the east coast. that would likely mean leaving my girls behind for a year (or more?), and (illegally?) subletting my apartment (for which i signed an 18-month lease just so i could avoid a rent increase). *sigh* i have yet to mention any of this to my ex, or to my girls. but i'm getting nervous about money. still...it's sososo hard to think about leaving my kids behind.
