Light snow falling from the sky, covering everything with a white sheen while the sounds of Christmas carols linger in the streets of Seoul, everything to signify that winter and Christmas was here. It was a mistake to come out Christmas shopping alone when everywhere you turn you are greeted with the sight of couples and families filling the streets, all this seems to highlight to Kim Junsu’s his single hood and loneliness all the more.
He wants to find somebody to love too but it seems more difficult for him with his work occupying most of his time so he had very few chances of meeting new people. Passing the huge Christmas tree decked out in the square, he couldn’t resist closing his eyes and making a wish that he would find somebody special this season.
The next day at work, Kim Jaejoong took one look at Junsu’s face and knew that something was wrong with the other.
“So how did your Christmas shopping goes?” Jaejoong asked.
“Oh, don’t ask. You know I hate shopping and Christmas shopping is the worst. It was horrible shopping with all those couples and family.” Junsu said, shaking his head, trying to shake the images away.
“You should have asked me along.” Jaejoong said.
“I didn’t want to disturb you, I knew you had a “hot” date last night and it was one of the rare days that I got off early.” Junsu said while Jaejoong blushed at his words. They had gotten close since they first joined the company together; maybe because they shared the same surname, getting to know each other was easier given Junsu’s shy nature. Jaejoong had taken it upon himself from the start to look after Junsu since he was often bullied by the others. Junsu was one of the few who knew he was gay.
“You would get off earlier if you stop helping those useless bums with their work.” Jaejoong said.
“They needed to spend time with their family and loved ones.”
“Well, how about you?”
“I’m single and have no attachments.”
“That’s not a good excuse.”
“Hyung…”
“Fine. I will stop talking about it as long as you go for a drink with me tonight.”
“But I…”
“No. End of discussion.”
Right there and then, Jaejoong had decided he needed to help Junsu or else their other colleagues will push their work to him because he was too kind-hearted to reject them and also because he didn’t have any commitments but how is he going to find someone if he didn’t even have time for himself?
That day after work, Jaejoong arrived at Junsu’s desk promptly, firstly to ward off anyone who tries to push their work to Junsu and also to prevent Junsu from getting out on the arrangement.
“Jae?”
“Drinks. Remember you promised me this morning?”
“But, I still have some work.”
“Do it tomorrow, it will still be here.” Jaejoong said as he started to help Junsu packed his stuff so that they can go off, not letting the other man have a chance to protest.
They went to a pub called Haven; it was a place they frequented because of its quiet ambience. They ordered their usual and sat back in their seats to enjoy the music while they waited for their orders to arrive.
“So what are your plans for Christmas?” Jaejoong asked as they started digging into their food.
“Err…staying at home with my DVDs, most probably.” Junsu answered with a sigh, picking at his food when he heard the question. This was getting repetitive, both the question and the answer but that’s what he had been doing for the last few holidays.
“How about joining us for Christmas?”
“No thanks. I don’t want to be a spare wheel.” It was not the first invitation he had but he had rejected them because he didn’t need to see all those lovey-dovey couple at such close proximity when he was single and alone.
“Ok. But you have to come for our Christmas Party on Christmas Eve.”
“Jae!” Junsu protested.
“Unless you find someone special before that.”
“It’s not as easy as it sounds.”
“Fine, then I‘ll help you find one. So tell me what you like?”
“Hyung.”
“Humour me.”
“Looks and age doesn’t matter. Just someone who share similar interests with me.”
“How about sex? Male or female doesn’t matter?” Junsu blushed at the question but didn’t answer. Though Junsu have never said so before, Jaejoong guessed that he likes guys too. And from what Jaejoong knows about Junsu, he feels that the other needed taking care of and in this case, he needs someone older and he knew the perfect one to introduce to him. Knowing Junsu’s personality, he needed to plan this carefully. For the rest of the time, they just talked about other things and the previous topic was forgotten.
The next few days, Jaejoong also didn’t bring up the topic again and Junsu never thought about it too until the weekend came around.
“Junsu, are you free tonight?”
“Yes, what’s up?”
“I was planning to go for pianist Paik Kun Woo's recital at the Seoul Arts Center tonight at 8pm but Yunho is down with gastric flu so we can’t make it and I don’t want to waste the ticket and I know you loved him too, so will you go for it instead?”
“I’m ok with it but I don’t know who to call at this time?”
“Oh, I already given the other ticket to another friend of mine, so don’t worry, just go for the concert and enjoy it. By the way, my friend is called Park Yoochun.” Jaejoong smiled like a cat that had just swallowed some cream, mission accomplished, now it’s all up to Yoochun to display his charms.
Seoul Arts Center
Junsu was in the foyer of the building and was completely lost; he had tried to follow the directions but was lost within minutes in the huge center. The recital was starting soon, he could hear the bells ringing, signaling that the audience should be seated as the concert was starting.
Just then a low melodic voice asked in his ear. “Are you lost?” Junsu turned around and saw a handsome young stranger smiling gently at him. The man was just slightly taller than him, with short-cropped black hair; he was smartly dressed in a black suit. He must have been staring at the man because the man repeated his question again.
“Yes, I’m looking for the concert hall.” Junsu answered, his cheeks reddening from the man’s stare at his inattentiveness.
“I’m going to the same place, why don’t you go with me?”
“Oh, you’re going for Paik Kun Woo’s recital too?”
“Yes.” The stranger smiled and took Junsu’s hand in his own, pulling him along in the direction of the Concert Hall. They made it just in time and imagine their surprise when they found that they were seated next to each other too. They didn’t talk much once they were seated as the music started and they were brought into the world of Beethoven easily by the renowned pianist.
They finally had a chance to talk to each other during the intermission when they went out together to grab a drink.
“So, you’re Jaejoong’s friend, Park Yoochun?” Junsu asked.
“Yes, and you’re his colleague Kim Junsu?” Yoochun asked back and Junsu nodded.
“So you like Paik Kun Woo?”
“Yes. I play the piano too.”
“Really, me too.”
However because of the large crowd, they didn’t have a chance to talk further before the bell ring again to signal the start of the second part of the concert. They hurried back to their seats but arranged to meet up after the concert for a drink and something to eat.
They chatted happily like old friends in a small café that Yoochun chose. Junsu was glad to know that they shared many common interests like their love for music. Junsu found out that Yoochun and Jaejoong were childhood friends but Yoochun’s family migrated to the States when he was around 15 and he had only come back to Korea recently. They were only getting to know each other better when the waitress came over to inform them that the café was closing soon, it was only then that they realized that they were the only customers left. They had been too engrossed in each other to even notice. So they reluctantly call it a night since Yoochun had something on the next morning but they exchanged phone numbers and promised to call each other before they left.
“So what do you think about him?” Jaejoong asked Junsu as soon as he saw him the next working day.
“Who?” Junsu was concentrating on his work and didn’t manage to catch the subject.
“Park Yoochun. How did the concert go?”
“Good. Very good. He’s wonderful.”
“The pianist or Yoochun?” Jaejoong teased while Junsu blushed.
“Both.” Junsu mumbled in a soft voice. Jaejoong was going to ask more but was interrupted by his colleague and the matter was forgotten. However Yoochun and Junsu had kept in touch over the phone since the concert, usually with Yoochun calling Junsu up just to chat or even to meet up for dinner. All this continued for a few weeks.
Jaejoong on the other hand knew what was going on but he didn’t pushed them because he knew that in love, it’s better for nature to run its course rather than to force it but as Christmas gets nearer and nearer and there was still no sign that Yoochun was going to ask Junsu to spend the holidays with him, he knew he had to do something so he called Yoochun out for dinner one night.
“How are things going with you and Junsu?”
“Very well.”
“Do you like him?”
“Of course.”
“So when are you going to tell him that? What are you waiting for? Christmas? It’s just 5 days away.” Jaejoong’s volume had risen with each word that he spoke, indicating his impatience.
“Hyung, I know what I’m doing.”
“You better, or I’m kidnapping Junsu for Christmas then you will have to spend it alone. Remember to come for the Christmas party and you better get something for Junsu or else.” Jaejoong warned.
All too soon, Christmas Eve came along and the party was already in full swing when Junsu reached Jaejoong’s house. To say that he was disappointed that Yoochun had not asked him to spend Christmas was just to put it mildly. He thought that he finally found somebody special but apparently the other did not thought the same. It seems that he was destined to get drunk and spend Christmas alone this year again. Yoochun had not arrived when he reached and he quickly got a drink before finding a cosy corner to get better acquainted with it.
Yoochun saw Junsu in the corner of the room the moment he stepped into Jaejoong’s house.
“You finally decided to make your appearance?” Jaejoong asked.
“Sorry, I needed to buy some presents.”
“He had been drinking since he arrived.” Jaejoong said, tilting his head in Junsu’s direction to indicate to Yoochun who he was talking about. Yoochun took his drink and walked towards the direction of where Junsu was sitting but he seems to know his intention and was out of the way before he had even reached him. Everytime he tries to get close, Junsu would move away and as the party proceeded, with more people coming, it was harder and harder to get to Junsu.
He finally found the chance when he spied the man standing under a sprig of mistletoe. This was it. He reached him before he notices and pulled him in for a kiss before he could refuse him. Yoochun kisses him hard and long, until he could feel his lungs screaming before letting go of the lips to allow air into his constricted passage.
“What was that for?” Junsu asked in between taking huge gulps of air.
“Mistletoe.” Yoochun answered, pointing to the object above them.
“Oh. I see.” Junsu said sadly before turning into the crowd.
“Junsu, wait.” Yoochun tried to catch the man but was obstructed by the people in the room. As the night progress, he tried to look for Junsu again but to no avail and he had to look for Jaejoong for help.
“I can’t find Junsu.”
“I thought you don’t need my help?”
“He seems to have misunderstood me.” Yoochun said.
“Please. Who waits until the very last minute to ask someone to spend Christmas with? He was waiting for your call this whole week.”
“I…I was trying to plan something special.”
“You better. I’ll help you find him.” Saying that Jaejoong turned and left Yoochun to look for the elusive Junsu. Within minutes he had the younger man in his arms, he looked to be slightly drunk, his cheeks flushed.
“Here’s your chance.” Jaejoong said passing the smaller man into Yoochun’s arms. With that, Yoochun drove Junsu back to his place where he had already prepared something special for him. Junsu was muttering beneath his breath all the way in the car, Yoochun could hear his name occasionally among the incoherent phrases coming out of Junsu’s mouth.
When they reached his place, he carried Junsu straight into his room and placed him on his bed where he belonged. He helped Junsu took off his shoes and clothes before taking off his own and joining the naked body in his bed. Sometime during the night, whether out of comfort or warmth or something else, the two bodies reached for more and the usual happened.
The next morning, the first thing Junsu saw when he opened his eyes was Yoochun’s closed-up face, he nearly screamed out in fright but manages to swallow the scream at the last minute. Yoochun was a light sleeper and he could feel the tensing up of the body in his arms and he opened his eyes.
“Morning, Baby. Merry Christmas.” He said, leaning in to kiss Junsu on the lips.
“Yoochun? How? What?” Junsu said, not making sense of what had happened.
“You’re drunk and I drove you back to my place since there wouldn’t be anyone to take care of you at your place. Yes, we made love last night.” Yoochun explained as he sees Junsu’s eyes getting wider and wider from each of his words.
“But… you…”
“Baby, I’m sorry. I love you and I know it’s a bit late but will spend Christmas with me?”
“I…”
“Wait.” Yoochun said as he turned around and bent to retrieve his pants from the floor and digging through his pockets he took out a box and gave it to Junsu.
“What is it?” Junsu said as he unwrapped the box and took out a lovely black onyx pendent and necklace.
“Merry Christmas. I had waited for this to arrive before asking you to spend the holidays with me but it was late. This is a specially designed pendant called “Keys” just like the keys on the piano. I had it specially flown in from Singapore. I knew that this was what I wanted to give you for Christmas the moment I saw you standing lost at the Seoul Arts Center.”
“Yoochun.” Junsu said, touched at his gesture.
“So will you spend your Christmas with me?” Yoochun asked again.
“Yes though I’m already spending it with you.”
“Well the day is only just starting and I needed to remind you of certain things that you might have forgotten about last night.” Yoochun said as he quickly maneuvered until he was on top of Junsu and letting the other feel his passion.
“Yoochun!” Junsu tried to cry out but the rest of the sentence was swallowed by Yoochun when he closes his mouth over Junsu and proceeded to show Junsu what he had missed out last night. The two lonely hearts had finally found somebody to love for the season all thanks to an intervening soul.
