PrologueChapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Interlude Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9
Our life was back to normal again after the spar Brian had with Micky. He seems to understand where he stood with me finally, only contacting me when our job requires him to do so. He has some classes with us but he doesn’t pester me as much as before, sometimes even keeping his distance from us. Our relationship became more cordial, to one like that of between good colleagues.
Today, the guys decided to go and try this new restaurant over at the other side of town, courtesy of Changmin’s suggestion as usual. I was not joining them, as I had to report to headquarters about our progress. So the rest of the guys went ahead while I went home alone.
After I put down my things, I went into my “office”, one of the rooms in my apartment, which I had converted to be my temporary office. The sight that greeted me when I opened the door would be the dream of many techno-geeks. Some of the most sophisticated and advanced technology could be found in this room. All of which was necessary to assist us in solving the case. This is one of the main reasons why the door to this room is kept closed most of the time and why I have never allowed Micky to come close to the room. He would have guessed our identity if he had known about the existence of this room.
I went into the room, make myself comfortable in my seat before calling Inspector Holmes and updating him on the latest development on the case, not that there were any.
“Xiah, there have been some recent developments on the case back here. Brian has more details, he will inform you on the latest happenings. Give him a call. That’s all for now. Call me again when you have more to report on.”
“Yes. Sir.” I hung up the phone, resting a while before picking it up to call Brian.
“Hello, Xiah here, you have the latest updates for me?”
“Yes, some good news and some not so good news. Which do you want to hear first?”
“Just bring it on.”
“Good news is that we have managed to catch Kim Jung Soo. He has been arrested on charges of involvement with organized crime and the murder of Colombian Jochiam Barkholtz who was involved in drug trafficking. The date for the trial has been set for two weeks later. Bad news is that he is out on bail now.”
“How could the judge give him bail? He’s such a dangerous guy.”
“Well, the guy’s lawyer knows that and thus they are willing to pay a higher bail of US$5 million and they have allowed us to keep his passport so that he won’t escape out of the country.”
“That’s just bullshit. We all know that sum of money is just peanuts o them and they’re the mafia for gods sake, they could get a fake passport just as easily.”
“We know that and the judge knows that but the law is the law. All are to be treated as innocent until proven guilty. So the issue now is that you and the rest of the guys have to make sure that Jaejoong is alive and kicking at the end of the two weeks.”
“That’s our job.”
“I know but now it’s more pressing because they knows that Jaejoong is the only key witness we have and they will want to make sure that he won’t be able to go to that trial at all cost. They are already willing to pay US$5 million just for bail so they will stop at nothing.”
“We will do our best to protect Jaejoong.”
“Good, because I will be leaving in 2 days time.”
“Why so fast?” I asked curious as to the need for the rush. Was it because of me?
“You know I am in charge of the court case. I need time to help prepare for the trial.”
“Ok. I will help make the necessary arrangements.” I answered.
“Take care of yourself.”
“Thanks. I will.” I said softly. I know his feelings for me but I can’t return them so that’s the only thing I can say to him.
“I hope you will be happy even if the one beside you is not me.”
I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. I’m happy with the “us” now. At least you are not avoiding me like I'm the plague.”
“Brian.”
“I think that’s it for now. I still need to pack. I will send you the latest information and contact you again when I have more news.” Brian said before hanging up. I sighed when I heard the dial tone; maybe this was the best for us.
I just closed my eyes to rest and to think about the case when my thoughts were interrupted by the shrill ringing of the phone. I picked it up immediately and Changmin’s voice came in harsh and urgent.
“Hello. We’ve some trouble, can you send someone to pick us up?” Changmin said. I immediately turn to my right to look at the screen, which showed their location. I saw that Sungmin was just nearby.
“Hold on, let me check with Sungmin.” I said before taking out my handphone and calling Sungmin.
“Max and the guys met with some trouble. They are at this place. Go and pick them up and bring them back to my place.”
“Yes sir.” Sungmin said quickly. I turned back to Changmin who was still holding on the other phone.
“Sungmin is nearby, he will be there in ten minutes.”
I would never have thought that they moved so fast. Changmin did not say whether any of them was hurt but to be on the safe side, I decided to call Shiwon to come over.
“Hi, I need your help, bring your stuff to my place now.”
“At least tell me what’s going on.” Shiwon asked.
“Changmin and the rest met with some trouble, I’m not sure whether they are hurt but to be safe, you better come over and had a look at them.”
“Ok. I will be there in a while.”
“Thanks.”
My mind was churning with thoughts about the case and waiting for them to come back. Not to allow myself time to dwell on it; I decided to look at the information Brian had sent over regarding the case. I was reading through the file when I heard the urgent knocks on my door.
I know it was Changmin. I quickly locked the door to my office before moving towards the front door. I took a moment to recompose myself before opening the door. I quickly ushered them into my apartment.
“What happened?” I asked worriedly, looking at them, trying to see whether any of them were hurt badly. They looked fine except for Jaejoong who was too pale.
“Is he hurt?” I asked Yunho, pointing to Jaejoong who was still dazed and leaning almost all his weight on Yunho. I know Yunho would not let anything happen to Jaejoong but still I needed to be sure.
“No, he’s just in shock.” Yunho answered, quickly carrying Jaejoong to rest on my couch.
“I’ve called Shiwon, he can take a look at Jaejoong when he’s here.” I told him, noting the look of relief on his face from my words.
“Junsu, what is this?” Micky suddenly asked me.
“What is what?” I asked him back, confusion on my face, what was he asking about?
“Hyung, he knows.” Changmin said to me, giving me a look. Maybe because my mind was too caught up with Jaejoong that I didn’t notice it but I got the drift when I saw the look Changmin had.
“Are you involved in this too? Are you an Interpol agent too?” Micky asked, he was hoping that I was not involved in this, but I knew my answer would dash his hopes.
“What if I am?” I said back to him, staring at him, watching his reactions.
“Junsu, why did you have to be involved too, do you know how dangerous this is?” He said, worry and concern in his eyes. Of course I know of the dangers, if I didn’t I wouldn’t have joined the force. His eyes only saw the side of me that he wants to see.
“Micky, don’t be an idiot, did you think we were all here by coincidence?” I said harshly, hoping that he would see the real me, not the one he thought he had to protect.
“No, this can’t be true.” I said, shaking his head, not wanting to believe the truth that was staring at him.
“Why is it that you can be an undercover agent, while I can’t be one?” I asked again.
“You know I’m an undercover agent?” He asked in surprise.
“Yes.” I nodded.
“How long have you known?”
“Since the beginning.” I could see he was shocked at my answer.
“I don’t think we should be spending time arguing who is or not an agent.” Yunho said, noting the tension between the two of us and trying to diffuse some of it.
“Yes, we should be finding out who are the culprits for the shooting instead.” I said, allowing the change in topic.
“Changmin, did you have a good look at the vehicle that was pursuing you? Did you get their car plate number?” I turned and asked him.
“Yes. Of course.” Changmin said.
“Give it to Sungmin to run in the system to check who the car belong to.” I said to Changmin, who promptly did so. Sungmin took the key from me and quickly went into the room.
The room descended into silence again with the leaving of Sungmin but was quickly broken by the knocks on the door again. I guessed it would be Shiwon and quickly went to open the door. I briefly told him that only Jaejoong seems to be affected by the incident today. He immediately went over to check on Jaejoong who was lying on the couch when he came into the room.
“Is he one of you too?” Micky asked me, pointing to Shiwon.
“Not really.” I shake my head, not wanting to say more on the matter. Taking a quick look around the room, I could see that they must be tired out from the activities of today and it would be better if we discuss the case tomorrow when we are all in a clearer mind.
“Why don’t all of you stay the night tonight, we will talk about the rest tomorrow when everyone had rested. I think everyone had enough adventure today.” I said.
“Yunho hyung, you and Jaejoong hyung can stay with me.” Changmin offered, knowing that I don’t have enough rooms to accommodate everyone.
“Micky, what about you?” I asked him, he seems to be trying to process all that he had learned today and was having a hard time accepting the facts. I was afraid that he would want to stay away from us after what he had learned.
“I’ll stay.” Micky said after a long while. I knew there was many questions that he wanted to ask but yet scared of what would the answers bring so he chose to remain silent, sitting on the couch deep in thoughts.
“So it’s settled, let’s have a good night rest today and we will meet again back here at 9am in the morning, we can skip classes tomorrow, I think.” I said to the rest of them, dismissing them for the day.
“How’s he?” I asked Shiwon after he had finished checking on Jaejoong.
“No injuries, just a case of mild shock, I’ve given him a shot so that he will sleep, he should be back to normal after a good night sleep.” With that assurance, Yunho carried Jaejoong back to Changmin’s place.
After that, all the guys left, leaving only me and Micky alone, it was awkward between the two of us, each not knowing what to say to each other. I quickly make an excuse to leave the room, saying that I had some work I needed to do, leaving Micky alone in the living room.
After that, I went back into my office and gave a call to Inspector Holmes to tell him what had happened.
“Inspector, Micky knows about our identities now since he was with them when the attack happened.”
“That can’t be helped. Double your efforts to protect Jaejoong now.”
“Yes, sir, I know what to do. What about Micky?”
“It’s your call. I put you in charge of the case. If you feel that he can be trusted and won’t disclose your identities, I have nothing to say.”
“I think Micky can be trusted to not tell anyone of our identities.”
“Fine, then do what you see fit.”
“Thanks.” After ending the call with the Inspector, I placed a call to Brian to inform him about the attack. He was not surprised by the news.
“I will try to see whether we can use this against Mr Kim to make the judge withdraw his bail. Keep me posted when you have further news.” After that, I remembered I still had to help make the necessary school withdrawal arrangements for Brian. By the time I was finished with everything, it was time for dinner.
When I came out of the room, I could see Micky was still sitting on the couch deep in thoughts. Not wanting to disturb him, I went into the kitchen to make dinner for the both of us. When it was ready, I called him to have dinner. We ate our dinner together quietly, not saying a word to each other. Finally the silence was broken by his voice.
“Was it all just an act?” He asked me softly. I was saddened by the question. He was doubting me and my feelings for him.
“Do you think that it was just an act?” I asked him back, hoping that he at least had some confidence in us.
“I don’t know what to think anymore.” His answer disappointed me.
“No.” I looked at me as I was saying this, hoping that he could see the truth in my eyes but he didn’t. I turned away from him and left the room, not wanting him to see the tears in my eyes.
That night, I tossed and turned in my bed, the memory of the sadness in his eyes as he asked me about us kept replaying in my mind. I only hope that tomorrow will be a better day.
