Chapter 4

After Micky and I got together, it was not all smooth sailing. One, we don’t get to spend a lot of time together as normal couples do as he had to stay close to Jaejoong to protect him while I have my own duties I needed to do. Two, our friends, most notably Hyukjae or Changmin is always around with us. That’s why we treasure the little moments we could spend together more. We were happy though I don’t show it that much while Micky seemed to have a goofy grin on all the time.

It was a tiring time for all of us since there were no more incidents or attempts on Jaejoong.
Sometimes it just seems too quiet, like the clam before a storm. Everyone was also getting restless with the lack of activity from the other side, were they playing some sort of game, trying to make us lower our guards before attacking? We were constantly on our guard against everyone and this was tiring mentally for all of us.

Even the Korean police were anxious at the lack of progress in the case. Sergeant Kim have been asking me whether we need more help, willing to offer more manpower to us to help us solve the case sooner. I knew Micky was getting anxious about the case too, he had been keeping his eyes open more in school, often scrutinizing everyone that came too close to us.

It was another normal day in school and I was walking along the corridor to class with Micky and the rest when he suddenly said he needed to go the bathroom and quickly ran off. I turned back to look at him turning the corner but in the opposite direction of where the bathrooms are.

“Did you see that?” Changmin asked, he had noticed the same thing. I nodded, wondering why Micky had to lie to us.

“He was staring at that girl leaning against the wall at the last turn. Seems like they know each other.” Hyukjae said, the implication in that statement was deep. I had saw the surprised look on his face as we passed by but I did not said anything. Hyukjae looked at me, trying to gauge my reaction but I didn’t say anything nor showed what I was feeling. Micky came back and joined us in a few minutes.

I could tell he was nervous and fidgety for the rest of the day and I ask him what was wrong but he wouldn’t tell me. What was he trying to hide from me? Weren’t we supposed to be boyfriends? Was the girl someone from the police force too? If so why haven’t Sergeant Kim notified me when we last talked to each other? This mixing of business with pleasure was not going as well as I thought.

I think the rest of the guys notice my pensive mood and tried to cheer me up. Changmin suggests going to this new café for coffee and cakes after class. So after class, as we were making our way to the place, Micky suddenly said that he left behind some of his books in class and that he needed to go get them. He asked us to go on ahead and will meet up with us at the café instead.

“That was suspicious. He must be meeting with that girl.” Hyukjae said. My heart constricted painfully at the thought of Micky arranging a rendezvous with the girl behind my back. I thought he really liked me, was this just all talk? Did he forget about his mission?

“You guys go on ahead first. I’ll catch up with you later.” I said to them, quickly walking in the direction Micky had gone. I needed to know what was happening.

“Su, I’ll go with you.” Hyukjae said, catching up with me easily. Somehow I was glad that he was with me.

We walked back to the classroom and Micky was not there, so we walked along the corridor searching for him. We finally heard what sounded like Micky’s voice coming from the music room. There was another voice besides his and we knew he was not alone in that room. I walked closer; peering into the crack made by the ajar door and saw Micky and the girl talking. They seem to know each other quite well from their body language.

I was thinking of calling out to him when I saw the girl moved forward and planted her lips onto Micky’s. However he didn’t do anything to stop or to push her away. I didn’t want to
see anymore of that so I spun around and left the place as fast as I could, with Hyukjae hot on my heels.

“Didn’t I told you before he’s a player.” Hyukjae said.

“Let’s go.” I said in the coldest voice possible, preventing any more comments, keeping my emotions in check. We went to the parking lot to get my car. Hyukjae drove us to meet the guys, not trusting me to drive us there in my mood.

We arrived and went in to meet with the guys. They have already ordered their food and were digging in into them hungrily. We quickly sit down while Jaejoong passed us the menus.

“See what you want to eat and make your orders.”

“I’m not really hungry.” I said. My mind was still a turmoil of emotions.

“What happen?” Yunho asked when he noticed my mood. We have been partners for a couple of years and he knew me quite well.

“Where’s Micky?” Changmin asked.

“Kissing a girl.” Hyukjae said.

“What?” Three voices rang out, shock evident in their faces.

“I’m going to kill him.” Yunho growled out, shooting out from his seat but was restrained by the one beside him, who shakes his head.

“Sit down, hyung.” I said tonelessly. I was the one who should be angry enough to kill him but instead there was only sadness and disappointment that fills my heart. He looked at me, noting my tone, before settling down in his seat again.

“Are you ok?”

“I’m fine.”

“But you don’t look fine.”

“Eat your food, if not, let’s go.” I said to Changmin curtly. I think he was surprised by my tone and so was I. I gave him an apologetic smile.

I just needed some time alone to think about the issue. I didn’t want to jump to any conclusions at this moment. Everyone deserves a fair trial, my mind keep telling that but my heart doesn’t want to listen to it. I think my mood affected everyone else and nobody wanted to stay on any longer so we decided to leave the place to go back home. It wasn’t wise to linger outside too much because it makes Jaejoong a much too easy target for them.

We left the place and drove home. This time I drove, I needed something to concentrate on or else the image of Micky kissing the girl would keep on flashing before me.

“Xiah.” Hyukjae called urgently beside me in the passenger seat. I turned and looked at him while he tilted his head to the side, indicating the dark blue car that was behind us.

“What about it?” I asked.

“It had been following us since we left the café.”

“Give Changmin a call and warn them. I will try to divert them away.” I said to Hyukjae who was already dialing Changmin and telling him what was happening.

In an alley.

Xiah, Hyukjae and Changmin were engaged in a furious shoot out with some guys. Jaejoong had already been brought to somewhere safe by Yunho, while the rest of the guys take care of the bad guys. Everything seems to be under control by them until it started raining heavily which causes Changmin to made a wrong move. It seems to reflect my mood at that moment. Were the heavens crying for me because I couldn’t do it? I shakes my head, I shouldn’t let this kind of thoughts bothered me when I’m on a case. I saw someone aiming his pistol at Changmin out of the corner of my eyes.

“Get down.” I shouted to Changmin but he was too slow to react, hampered by his clothes, which were drenched by the rain. There was no hesitation on my part as I quickly pushed him out of the way in time but I was not so lucky myself, getting grazed by the bullet. Hyukjae quickly fired a few more rounds and the guys scattered in all directions as they escaped.

“Everyone ok?” I asked, as I slowly get up, holding my stomach.

“Xiah, you’re hurt.” Changmin said, quickly moving to help me. He was not much better, hitting his knee when I pushed him away.

“I think we need to send you to Shiwon hyung as soon as possible.” Hyukjae said.

At Shiwon’s clinic.

“There, all done.” Shiwon said to me as he finished stitching up the wound on my stomach.

“Try not to get the wound wet for the next few days and no strenuous exercise, I don’t want your stitches to tear. You should be back to normal in a couple of days.” Shiwon said as he helped me up from the bed before inspecting Changmin’s injuries.

Back at home; I quickly give a call to Yunho to check with him about Jaejoong and to tell him what happened on our side. I could tell he was unhappy not to be part of the action but he knew it was all for Jaejoong’s safety.

“Xiah, take a hot bath first. You don’t want to catch a cold from the rain.” Hyukjae said. He was concerned about my injuries. It was rare for me to get injured; usually it was either Yunho or Changmin who was the one who always get himself injured.

“I’m fine, don’t worry.” I said, not wanting to worry him more but he saw through me easily.

“No, you’re not. The Xiah I knew would not have done something so stupid and got himself injured. It’s all that stupid Micky’s fault.”

“We’ve forgotten about him. He must be worried.” I said, remembering that we left the café without informing him and after that we were too busy to do anything.

“You’re still thinking about that fool at this time? You’re injured because of him. It’s all his fault.” Hyukjae accused.

“It’s not anyone’s fault. We knew this could happen when we took on the case.”  I reminded Hyukjae.

“Yes. We knew it would happen but not to you. It never happened before. If you were not upset about him, it would never had happened.”

“Hyukie, I don’t want to argue with you anymore. I’m tired, it has been a long day.” I said, knowing the truth in that statement. I had never lost my cool while on a case before and this was the first time it had happened. However I was also really tired, the wound on my stomach starting to throb. I think he could tell the truth from my face and he backed down, not arguing with me anymore.

“Fine, take your bath, I’ll prepare some food for you so that you can take your medicine.”

“Are you trying to kill me by making me eat what you make?” I teased him.

“Fine, I will order take away.”

“Thanks. You’re staying tonight?”

“Yes, or else who is going to take care of you?”

“Hyukie. Thanks for everything.”

“All right. I get it. What do you want to eat?”

“Anything, you know what I like.” I said as I took my clean clothes and moved to the bathroom, before stepping in, I suddenly remembered something.

“Hyukjae, one more thing.” I called.

“I know, get Sungmin to check up on who the mysterious lady is.”

“Yes. You know me the best.”

“I’m doing this not only for the case but also for you. If that guys dares to two-time you, I will make sure that he will never walk straight again.”

I was glad that Hyukjae decided to stay with me that night because I had a high fever in the middle of the night, I was not sure whether from staying in the rain too long or because of the wound or both. Luckily Hyukjae was there to take care of me. The next morning, I was too weak to go to school and Hyukjae called Changmin to let him know.
