PrologueChapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Interlude
That night, everyone meet up at my place for dinner, it was not just a normal gathering of friends but also a time for them to exchange information and to talk about the case. After a hearty dinner cooked by me, everyone settled down and started the discussion about the case.
“So, Hyukjae, what has been happening back in the States?” I asked.
“Well, the police already have some evidence of his crimes and with Jaejoong’s testimony, when they catch Kim Soo Jung, they will be able to keep him in jail for a long long time.”
“That’s good to know, provided they don’t kill Jaejoong first.” Changmin said.
“Yes. That’s why we have to make sure that Jaejoong is safe until he can be brought to trial.” I replied.
“Hyukjae, what do you think about Micky?” I asked my best friend. He might be a little naughty and cheeky at times but he is also quite a good judge of character.
“He looks and acts like an idiot.” Hyukjae repeated what he said earlier. I arched an eyebrow at his comments, waiting for his elaboration; he wouldn’t make this kind of comments without some justification.
“He’s reckless, from the way he behaves just now, his actions could cost us in an operation and especially on this case, we need to be extra careful because we don’t have the resources or the manpower against the gangs.”
“True, that’s why we have not divulged our identities to him yet because we are not sure whether he might inadvertently give out information about the case.” I replied.
“Anyone got anything else to add?”
“Well, I said we still keep him close, I feel better that at least we have another person to make sure that Jaejoong is safe.” Yunho said, keeping the said man close to him.
“Anything else to report? No? Dismissed.” I said to the people around the table, I knew they were tired. Hyukjae stayed behind while the rest went out of the door.
“What do you want?” I asked my best friend, who seems troubled and had some difficulty finding his words.
“I meant what I said. I don’t like him. He’s an idiot.” Hyukjae said. I looked at him, not understanding the animosity Hyukjae had against Micky.
“You like him. He’s too reckless. He could get you killed. You know we should never mix business with pleasure especially in our line.” Hyukjae said. I knew he was worried for me; he had always kept a look out for me since we were young.
“I can take care of myself.”
“So you don’t deny you like him?” Hyukjae pressed. I did not say anything, what could I say? I didn’t want to lie to my best friend. Hyukjae shakes his head; muttering something under his breath, give me a pat on my shoulder and left.
For the next few days, Hyukjae keep pestering me to play soccer or computer games or whatever he could think of. I knew he was trying to keep Micky away from me and I let him. Of course he couldn’t keep Micky away from me forever because he needed to help protect Jaejoong and we didn’t want him to be suspicious of us. The dinner date I promised Micky also seemed far away and was pushed to the back of my mind until one day Micky asked me. He must have bribed Changmin to help him keep Hyukjae away because suddenly I was free of his company.
We decided to have a simple dinner at my place to get to know each better. We’ve known each other for a while but I have never invited Micky to my place because there were some things in my rooms that we would not want Micky to find out. After making sure that nothing would give us away, I went into the kitchen to prepare dinner.
Most of the stuff was prepared and I was just waiting for Micky to turn up before I served the food. I heard the doorbell rang at that moment, and quickly wiped my hands before moving to open the door.
“Coming.” I called out and smiled when I saw him standing there nervously.
“Micky, you’re right on time. Come in.” I warmly welcomed him into the house.
“These are for you.” He said, stretching his hands out to give me a bouquet of flowers along with wine and a box of chocolates. I was surprised that he got me something; I could faintly see a blush on his cheeks as he lowered his head.
“Micky, you shouldn’t have.” I said, accepting the gifts, smiling even wider. He was sweet. I paused to inhale the sweetness of the flowers before reaching out a hand to pull him into the room when I see he was not making any move to come in.
“Take a seat first, dinner will be ready in a minute.” I ushered me into the living room while I went to the kitchen to check on the food and to put the flowers in a vase.
“I hoped you like pasta.” I said as I carried the food into the dining room.
“Anything is fine with me, I’m not a picky eater.” Micky answered, as he moved around to help me.
“Ha ha, now you sound like Changmin.” I teased, as I ushered him to sit down.
“So what did you do to keep Eunhyuk occupied?” I asked in curiosity, wondering what did he do to keep Hyukjae away and occupied?
“What do you mean?” He answered tentatively, looking nervous and fidgeting.
“Ha ha, you can’t lie to me, I know you did something.” I teased, I know Hyukjae too well, and he wouldn’t keep away for nothing.
“Erm… I didn’t do anything, I erm…asked Changmin to help keep him occupied.” Micky answered truthfully.
“So what did that cost you? A meal or two?”
“Three.”
“Ha ha. Is it really worth it? That boy could eat a horse if he wants to.” I laughed, only the witty Changmin have enough tricks to keep Hyukjae occupied but was it really worth it. That boy could really cost a den in one’s pockets. I could see him blushing at my words. It was still amazing to me that Micky the player that I read from the file is so shy or was it only me that caused him to act this way? The rest of the meal was spent pleasantly with us just talking and getting to know each other better. It feels good that it was just the two of us with no worries that the others would disrupt us.
“So are you going to give me a house tour?” He asked as we finished our meal.
“Erm…maybe next time. I didn’t have time to clean the rest of the rooms.” I said though that was not really the truth and I hope that he won’t pushed since we can’t let him see what was in the rooms.
“Why don’t we just watch some movies, I’ve got a couple of DVDs on the shelves, just pick one you like and pop it into the machine. I’ll just put the dishes away.” I tried to distract him instead, ushering him back into the living room.
I washed the dishes and quickly wiped them before making a move back into the living room. I saw Micky just standing there; staring intently at the DVD he was holding in his hands. He seemed to be deep in thoughts. Was it that difficult to choose a movie or was he thinking of something else? I went o stand beside him and looked down at the DVD he had in his hands.
“Hmph…interesting choice, so you wanna watch this?” I asked.
“Err…yeah, why not?” He answered in an uncertain tone.
I put the DVD into the machine and went to dim the lights, before coming back and joining Micky on the sofa to watch the movie. I knew he was stealing glances at me now and then but I didn’t want him to know I knew; I knew he would be more uncomfortable if I say anything so I concentrated on the movie. I could feel his hands moving on the back of the sofa but always stopping and retreating.
Halfway through the movie, he suddenly asked me, “Junsu-ah, what do you think of me?”
I turned around and looked at him, ”What brought on this question?”
“Err…I…” He fumbled, eyes darting around not looking at me and not saying anything.
“I really like you.” He finally stammered out.
“I like you too.”
“No, what I mean is I like you…” I placed my fingers on his lips, hushing him. Of course I knew what he meant and I knew he was nervous. Who wouldn’t when they just confess to someone of the same sex?
“I know.” I looked at him, smiling a gentle smile. The smile on his face got wider and wider as understanding dawned.
“So does that mean you…?” He asked hesitantly.
“Yes.” I nodded; yes it means I like you too.
“So does that mean we’re boyfriends now?” I nodded to his question, smiling at the goofy grin he had on. He was adorable like that.
He moved forward, closing the distance between us. As our lips got closer and closer, suddenly I stopped and asked, “Did you hear something?”
“No.” He answered. I’m sure I heard the guys voices so I stood up and moved off the sofa walking towards the door with Micky following close behind grudgingly. I walked to the door of the apartment silently and yanked it opened; three bodies suddenly fell unceremoniously into the room.
“What happened?” Micky asked as he looked at the bodies on the floor. Eunhyuk was at the bottom of the pile with both Changmin and Yunho on top of him. The three guys were groaning as they try to separate themselves gracefully with much difficulty with elbows and limbs often going in the wrong direction.
“The other two I understand but Yunho hyung, I expected better from you.” I said to a red-faced Yunho, who finally got out of the tangle. I knew they wouldn’t be that good to leave us alone for a few hours.
“Where’s your other half?” I asked, surprised that Yunho could leave Jaejoong alone. Wasn’t he the most nervous about the man?
“Jaejoong? He’s with Sungmin.” Yunho answered. The other two guys took this chance to move into the living room.
“Oh, you’re watching this movie, I wanted to watch this too.” Eunhyuk said shamelessly as he tried to make himself comfortable on the sofa.
“Hyung, what do you have for snacks?” asked Changmin who had moved into the kitchen to ransack some food for himself.
I shake my head at the guys, mumbling, “I can’t believe you guys actually tried to eavesdrop on us.”
“Get used to it.” Eunhyuk said, with no trace of remorse or regret.
I saw Micky whispering something to Changmin who was seated beside him on the sofa.
“Hyung, I did, but you never said how long. Do you know how hard it is to keep Eunhyuk hyung away, it should have been enough time for you and Junsu hyung.” He answered.
“So are you guys officially dating now?” the boy cheekily asked, the rest of them all turning to look at Micky. He nodded happily, smiling at me. I blushed when both Changmin and Yunho congratulated me. Maybe it really wouldn’t be that bad after all to mix business with pleasure.
