Damn, blast and bugger
A simple backup and upgrade of my laptop instead turned into a "please, you freaking piece of **** just boot from CD so I can wipe and start over from scratch"
Good news was I did back up my personal data before the system imploded. Bad news is it was only the personal stuff, so I'm having to find and install loads of software and reset all preferences on the damned machine.
