A Revelation

I had a revelation the other day while I was driving home. In "I <3 Huckabees," Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin repeat the question "How Am I Not Myself?" and speak about how connected we are. I was thinking about this in great detail, and I was trying to figure out just how I am not myself. Then it hit me.

When I'm not at school, I work at Agway loading up people's cars and trucks with heavy bags of soil, peat moss, stone, mulch, etc. They, in turn, go home and treat their plants with it, so that their plants can live healthy lives. Those plants then photosynthesize, taking in carbon dioxide in the air and creating oxygen so that we can breathe. That means that I am partly responsible for replenishing the oxygen supply of Cape Cod. I help the residents of Cape Cod breathe. I thought about this even more and I realized that every single interaction we have with other people and action that we take can be traced further and has a profound effect on the world. Even if it's something as simple as getting your car fixed by an auto mechanic. By doing so, you enable him to go home and feed, clothe, and educate his children. Those children have inifinite potential, and will grow up and each change the world in some way. One could even become the next Einstein, in which case you would be helping to create the next Einstein.

Even something as simple as a smile can change something. Think about all the times you've been having a really crappy day and someone who you walked past smiled at you. Didn't your mood improve?

What blew my mind even more was when I was thinking about how our bodies are mostly made of water. This was due to the fact that someone I drove by had "I Hope You Dance" blasting out their window, and it was at the part where she sings "I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean." I thought about this, and I had the single greatest realization of my life. You and I are made mostly out of water. When we perspire, our sweat evaporates, joining with the other moisture in the air. That moisture becomes the clouds, which rain our water all over the planet, including into the ocean. Take a minute to think about that...

We are the ocean.

When I thought about it even more, I realized that we are drinking each other every time we take a sip of water. When it rains, it rains us onto each other. We are each other.

To quote the Beatles,

I am He
as you are He
as you are Me
and we are all together
