Early this [Monday] morning, I dreamed I was at a comic book exchange at an outdoor market, most likely a flea market. There were boxes upon boxes, probably thousands of comic books spread across multiple tables at multiple booths. One comic catches my eye; I think it was based on an existing horror movie franchise, but I can't remember which one. [Was it a
Trick 'r Treat comic??] I pluck the comic out of its box and carry it with me to a neighboring table, setting it atop another box while I flip through the box next to it.
Dave Grohl -- yes,
that Dave Grohl -- sees the comic I've picked out and remarks how impressed he is with my selection. He disappears and returns a moment later with a stack of comics. I can tell from the covers that all of his comics are horror-themed, but as he flips through the pages of each book, I see some of the most horrific depictions of graphic violence and gore I have ever seen committed to print. While Grohl is gleefully pointing out the bloodiest elements of each book, I am fighting to keep down my last meal. [To be clear, I am a horror movie fan IRL, but whatever I saw in the dream was "beyond the pale!"]
I can't recall if I said something -- if I did, it was likely a backhanded compliment like, "Yeah, that's pretty cool," as opposed to what I was really thinking: "WHAT THE F**K IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?! And further, what the f**k is wrong with the people who wrote and illustrated those books?!" Or maybe I just made a face. Either way, he notes my disapproval and is very disappointed by it. "I thought you were into this sh*t! Well how about this?" He produces an unlabeled VHS tape and pops it into a small combination CRT TV and VCR. A video plays out on the screen of a man being dragged behind a pickup truck until ... you know what? I'm just gonna let you imagine "until what."
I run away from the table, hands clasped around my mouth so I don't "Regan MacNeil" green pea soup all over the place. All the while I hear "Mr. Foo" shouting behind me things like, "What happened?! I thought you were cool! ... You forgot your comic, bro!"
... I actually did end up going to a comic book expo at a local "dirt mall" with my friend Higdonious a few weeks ago. I came out empty-handed -- and we didn't run into any Dave Grohl lookalikes there -- but Higdonious scored a vintage Laurel and Hardy comic book [or was it Abbott and Costello?], as well as a Star Trek TOS crossover comic with ... something? I don't remember. It was weird, whatever it was.
Update: Not that anyone asked, but: It was Abbott and Costello, [
this one, in fact] and the Star Trek comic was a crossover with
Planet of the Apes.
