I also like to hand-wave a lot, shrug at the plot, and move on with my life. Take BSG for instance: who/what was Kara Thrace? I don't know and I don't care, but I loved her.
HAH! Yes, I heart Kara, but we never really did find out what the hell was up with her. (I, personally, liked the idea that her father was actually the last cylon, and that she herself was the first true 'hybrid' but that didn't pan out...)

Again, I point to "Shepard's tale" and leave it at that. No one cared what Odysseus did once he got home, just that he got home and reasserted his power. Shepard's odyssey is over; now it's the galaxy's turn to take up the mantel and drive forward in a new direction.
I agree with this. I've heard people say that the ending didn't seem like a dream because it was indoctrination, but that it seemed dream like because we are seeing the story being RETOLD. And since no one was around for that portion to say what REALLY happened, it took on a more grandiose scale, with the storytellers filling in the blanks the best the could off of the information that they had available. While I don't prefer that version, it DOES make sense, and I could see them (re: BioWare) having taken that route.

Food for thought.

if it makes you feel any better, this is the second weekend in a row where I have hung out with my mother and subjected her to tales of this gaming franchise. Because it makes me FEEL SO MANY THINGS. They just can not be contained.

Sorry this took me so long to reply to. I got a bit sidetracked. :P

The thing with Kara, and with shows like Lost or games like Mass Effect -- hell, even the entire sci-fi genre, is something I've been hearing a lot from the critics who defend the ending: if you take away the mystery of what something is, you loose something. You just know everything, you're like God, in a way, so that by knowing everything that happens, or has happened, you really aren't given the full experience. It's the not knowing that brings out fanfic and other creative expressions. It sucks to now know something, we all know that, but it's what makes life FUN. Not and all of sci-fi has this terrible cliche of not being able to tie up their loose strings. Seriously, when was the last sci-fi opera that you found tied things up? Bad, bad habit.

OOO, I like the idea of the story being retold from a historical point of view *is history geek*. That..I really like that. A little too much but I'll still stick with my original guns of the ending was, just that, the end.

And the Indoctrination Theory is starting to wear thin. I'm waiting for BioWare to produce something this month, at PAX or not, so I can know what's "canon" and then write fic like no tomorrow. I do hope that nothing really changes, maybe a few minor details here and there.

IKR?! I've been talking to one of my old supervisors at work about the game whenever I can. I persuaded him to start with ME2 first (instead of just ME3) but, even with that, I feel bad for talking his ear off about this game. Other than him, however, there is no one TO TALK TO ABOUT THIS IN RL. Other than my therapist...yeah, not sure about that one. LOL
