“She said she was glad that she talked me into giving you a chance.” Kris grinned as he traced figures on Adam's stomach. Adam giggled softly when Kris found a ticklish spot and pulled his boyfriend down slowly, pressing their mouths together in a slow, sleepy kiss.
It was sometime between late morning and early afternoon, and they'd both just woken up, curled together under the sheets and blissfully ignoring the rest of the world. It was a rare day where they had nothing else to do. Kris didn't have to work and he didn't have a session with Caden scheduled, and Adam didn't have any performances to get to. Adam grinned and nuzzled into Kris, nipping lightly at his jaw just to hear his breathy laugh.
“So...” Kris tilted his head so he could look at Adam, his thumbs brushing along his spine at the small of his back under their tangle of sheets. “Any ideas?”
Adam grinned. “Oh, I have a few.” He waggled his eyebrows, grin growing when Kris laughed and smacked at him. “What? I was just thinking of staying right here in bed alll day.” When Kris gave him a squinty-side-eye while he was still tucked over and laughing, Adam rolled his eyes dramatically. “I mean that in the most innocent way, you pervert.”
“Oh, I am so not the pervert in this relationship. I know exactly what you meant.” Kris paused a moment, then smirked. “Not that I'm objecting at all.”
Adam's mouth dropped into a scandalized 'o', and then they both burst into a fit of giggles, tucking around each other as their laughter tapered off and nuzzling into one another.
“I feel like I'm dreaming, a little bit.” Kris murmured, fingers tracing shapes into Adam's spine. Adam glanced down to him, taking in Kris' wide brown eyes and how he chewed on his lip for a few seconds before he spoke again. “I still can't help feeling like I don't deserve to be this happy...”
Adam frowned, and squeezed Kris a little bit closer as he replied. “You shouldn't feel like that...”
Kris didn't respond; he just scrunched his face up into a mockery of a smile and shrugged, almost as if to say 'Well, I don't'. Adam felt his frown deepen and he sighed, curling his arms around Kris and pulling him in, pressing a kiss to his temple and feeling the slight thump of Kris' pulse there. He paused, hesitating as he thought of what to say to Kris. He knew if he just argued with him that Kris would just keep denying him until they both went hoarse. So a change of subject, that'd be good.
Adam traced his lips down from Kris' temple to his cheekbone, grinning at how Kris trembled as he tried not to laugh. “You think of anything yet?” Adam had a few ideas, other than, you know, the obvious. Of course, he didn't want to chance spoiling this beautiful day so he was just going to tuck those away for later.
Kris' smile faded and he shrugged. “Yeah, something. I mean, I don't want to do it yet, but... today.” When Adam only stared at him to elaborate Kris sighed and dropped his eyes to the bedsheets, where he was plucking at a seam. “I... um, I was thinking of... calling Daniel later.”
Adam tried not to grin to widely and he nodded. I thought I would have to keep encouraging him to do it. “You want me there with you or...?”
Kris chewed on his lip for a bit, then he slowly shook his head. “I... I can do it alone.”
Adam nodded, then curled his fingers under Kris' hand where his fingers twitched against the sheets, pulling them up and away until he could get a firm hold on the younger man's hand.
Kris gave him a shaky, small smile, then tilted his head, nuzzling into Adam's shoulder for a while. They sat like that, Kris' breathing nice and even and quiet in the room. He seemed to be reacting better about the thought of talking with his family. Maybe he just misses them enough to get past that anxiety about it...
The bed shifted under him and Adam was brought out of his thoughts. Kris was moving over him, slowly untangling their fingers as he stretched.
Adam pouted. “Thought we agreed on bed all day...”
Kris grinned, then leaned down to cup Adam's face in his hands. “I have an idea. One think you'll like a lot better than that.”
Ooh! Adam swallowed heavily at the teasing tone of Kris' voice and the playful smirk curling his pretty lips. Just with that little bit, there was already heat pooling heavy in his stomach from arousal. I swear, he's gonna be the death of me someday...
Adam beamed up at his boyfriend, then practically leaped out of bed, dragging Kris where ever he wanted to go, hearing Kris' bright, happy laugh echoing through the hall as they moved.
Oh yeah, so much better than staying in bed all day... Adam smirked to himself as Kris pressed him down onto the couch and crawled over him, skimming his hands over Adam's skin. So, so much better...
Okay. It's gonna be fine. He didn't sound like he hated you when he called. Not that I really gave him a chance to sound like he did...
Kris gave a frustrated huff, felling the tension in his shoulders melt away a little when Adam pressed a soft kiss to his forehead, giving him a tight, squeezing hug before he left to give Kris some privacy. I do miss him, though... I miss being part of a real family... Kris felt the tell-tale sting of tears in his eyes and sucked in a deep breath, then queued up Daniel's number. Okay. This is it. I can do this. I don't have to be scared of this anymore...
He pressed the call button and brought the phone up to his ear, ignoring how his hand was shaking. It rang once, twice...
By the third ring, Kris was just pulling the phone away to hang up when a sleepy voice answered. “Hello?”
Kris heard the phone creak as his grip tightened, then let out a shuddering breath, ignoring the tears forming in his eyes again. He started and stopped a few times, mouth working, and then Daniel spoke up again, more awake. “H-h-hi. Um, hello, I mean, uh...” He dropped his free hand from where it was resting on Adam's shoulder and started plucking at the denim on his jeans. “It's, it's Kris.”
There was silence for a long while, then he heard a watery laugh. “Kris. I didn't think you'd actually call me back...”
Kris swallowed. “I... I didn't either.” He smiled lightly. “Adam talked me-” He stopped, then looked down, unsure if he should already be mentioning his boyfriend, considering. He chewed on his lip for a while, watching his fingers play with his jeans for a few seconds.
Before he got a chance to do anything with his words, though, Daniel was talking again. “Yeah, I... I talked to him. He's a little protective, isn't he?”
Kris frowned, and before he could stop himself blurted. “For very good reason.” There was a long, long silence, and Kris winced. Oh, yeah, doing great so far. “Shit, sorry, I... I-it's been hard, since then...”
Two beats of quiet then a small, hurt little huff. “Yeah... yeah, I understand...”
No, you don't. Kris grimaced and hastily shoved away the thoughts looming right there, and let out a breath. "So, uh, what happened... to, to change your mind, I mean?”
Daniel breathed in sharply before letting the breath out all at once. “I, well, I missed my brother.”
Kris waited for something else, then his frown deepened. “That's it? You don't talk to me for years because of me finally coming out, and that's all you have to say? That you missed me?” Kris huffed. “You weren't even there when it happened. You'd been calling at least every week before that then as soon as I'm kicked out, nothing?! What did they tell you? That I turned into some ungrateful freak while you were gone, and you just believed them? Didn't even try to get a hold of me?!”
“There wasn't anyway I could!” Daniel yelled as soon as Kris took a breath. “Yes, okay, they told me what happened. They said that you were banned from the house. They also said that if I tried to talk to you, I'd get the same treatment. I went out there as soon as I could, okay?” His brother let out a choked sob on the other line. “I couldn't find you anywhere. I looked for two years and you were nowhere to be found... So I gave up. I hate admitting it, but I did. I had no idea what happened to you. For all I knew, you were dead.”
Kris swallowed around the hard lump in his throat and blinked hard, scrubbing at his cheeks when tears spilled over. “So...” He glanced up at Adam when he felt a warm hand close around his, seeing a small, supportive smile on his face before he nodded. “So how'd you find me?”
The other brother sniffled. “I guessed. I thought... maybe you went to LA, how much you raved on about living there when you were younger.” He breathed out a laugh. “I called everyplace I could; hotels, cafes, bars... I asked around every place listed there. I finally got to someone who knew you, a coworker, I guess. They gave me your number.”
Kris felt the tears come back at his brother's words. I thought he just didn't try... All this time I thought he didn't care and... “I-I'm sorry, Dan. I...” He shook his head. “I maybe shouldn't have snapped at you like that...”
“It's fine.” There was a pause, then Daniel spoke up in a soft voice. “I'm just glad you're okay.” Another, as Kris' mind tried to bring up again all the ways he just wasn't okay. It's getting better, at least... “Are you... happy now? I mean, are things good?”
Kris looked over toward the hall where Adam disappeared, then smiled softly. “Yeah, now, they're good.” I don't have to tell him about what happened right now... He frowned. I know I have to sometime but... I'm not going to just throw all that out now, I don't want to risk ruining this...
Dan sighed. “Good.” There was some shuffling, and he heard yawning from the other end. “Listen, um, I have to go now but... We will talk later, right?”
Kris squeezed his knee, suddenly wishing Adam was there beside him instead of down the hall. “Yeah, yeah we'll talk.”
“Okay.” He could almost picture the smile on Daniel's face. “Talk to you then, night.” Then a second. “Don't... just disappear again, okay? Please?”
Kris froze; he sounded so worried and desperate. He never expected anything like this. What if my parents... He dashed that thought away immediately and bit back the tears blurring his vision. “O-okay, yeah. I, I won't.” He let out a shaking breath along with his brother and huffed out a laugh. “Night.”
He clicked the phone shut and dropped it into his lap. He stared down at it for a while, feeling... everything. Those tears he'd been fighting with the entire talk finally pooled over and he let them fall this time.
Without a word, Adam walked in, settled beside him on the couch and curled around him loosely, tucking Kris into him and shushing him softly when the dam holding everything, all those swirling emotions he'd been feeling for years, finally broke down and he sobbed, clinging to Adam.
