I had a job interview at the Detroit Zoo today. Well, actually, I was interviewing with Service Systems Associates, the company who runs the gift shops and concession stands at the Detroit Zoo. Since my father is the Human Resources Director for the Zoo, I can't get a job with the *actual* zoo. So, this is the next best thing.
I was so stressed about this interview. I was worried that I would have gotten all dressed up, and prepared for this interview, just to be told that I'm not what they are looking for. That has happened to me SO many times since I lost my job in February, that I'm starting to get VERY discouraged by the whole job search process. Running late didn't help my nerves either.
I got to the visitor's parking lot for the administration building about 6 minutes after 11:00 (my scheduled interview time). I had been told that the guard would know bout my interview, and I would be let into the employee parking lot, so that I could go to the SSA office. Problem. There was an SUV at the gate, and the driver was in a long, involved conference as to where they were supposed to be. All I could do was sit anxiously in my car, and watch the minutes tick by on my watch. Finally, the SUV moved to the visitor's lot, and I was able to get my temporary parking pass for my interview.
However, one I got through the gate, I was faced with *another* problem... all the parking spaces were FULL! I couldn't find a legal place to park! I ended up driving all over the place, trying to find a place to park. However, I didn't want to go too far away, because I didn't know where I was in this behind the scenes world of the Zoo. Finally, I spied a woman who looked as if she was going to her car. So, I followed her. She was walking very slow, probably expected me to pass her, but then looked back at me and pointed to herself and then to her car. I nodded, and smiled, and watched as she pulled out of her parking spot. Then, I parked there.
When I entered the SSA building, there was no one to greet me. It looked like there was a desk for a receptionist-type person, but no one was there. I stood in the doorway, feeling kind of awkward, until a woman walked by and offer to assist me. I told her I was there for an interview with Neil (human resources manager). She told me he was in a meeting, and that he would be with me soon.
I felt a little relived at this. Now, he wouldn't know that I was late! However, I ended up sitting, and waiting for him for a WHILE! Once Neil finally took me to his office, we only spoke for a grand total of 10 minutes. I kind of felt a little rushed, and that I didn't have a very good opportunity to sell myself. But, he did say that I would be hearing from him with in the next 2 days.
I hope I gave him enough information to go on. I told him that I have worked in retail and food service management before, and that I have also worked at Cedar point before, so I'm accustomed to this kind of entertainment industry. He seemed cool with the fact that I wanted to only work during the week, and not on weekends. He even said that a lot of his employees are in high school, and can ONLY work weekends. He actually said that he didn't see that being a problem. He asked me when I could start. I looked right at him and said "Tomorrow". He smiled at that.
I tried to remind him that I can communicate in American Sign Language, but there never seemed to be a good opportunity.
Well, I can put that in the thank you letter I need to write.
So, everyone, keep your fingers crossed for me. I'll try to follow up with an update.
