Fair Trade Sugar

Feb 07, 2011 10:32

I'd rather not consume sugar made from genetically-engineered sugar beets, and that likely means I can't buy mainstream mass-produced sugar anymore (I believe this won't be an issue till next year sometime, but I'd rather find a workaround now). Boston Organics has started offering fair trade sugar from Dean's Beans: Read more... )

No idea about the issue, but wifty-hippy friends in Northampton swear by Dean's Beans.

I don't know about the issue or supplier but can tell you that Wholesome Sweeteners (a huge brand that you can find at Whole Foods, Costco, and some regular grocery stores) sells all organic and mostly fair-trade sugar. Because US labeling sucks, you may have to contact manufacturers directly to find out about whether their producers use GMO seed.

US labelling will continue to suck, which is why I'm attempting to find a supplier now. Check out the blog La Vida Locavore if you're interested in the issue of GE sugar beets (although right now it's GE alfalfa that's dominating the news, of course).

Thanks for the brand info, I'll check them out. Slightly OT, have you ever had Dean's Beans coffee? If I end up ordering sugar from them, might be nice to kill two birds etc.

I have had the coffee and don't love it; the roasts are a little dark for my taste. You might like it though; it's worth a try!

A tiny bit of internet research turned up this on Wholesome Sweetners, averring that they are GMO-free; they also say they only use cane sugar.

Grown in Paraguay, just like the Dean's Beans selection. Thanks, I will definitely check my neighbourhood Whole Foods for this!

Just buy "pure cane sugar"

It *does* seem like all genetic manipulation is happening in the sugar beets alone ...
