We open on the Jaffa planet of Dar Eshkalon, and a scene of destruction. Destruction and bodies all over the place. Daniel finds Bra'tac - Sam finds Teal'c... We all remember that we're four eps from the end... ulp...
CREDITS!
The village, some time earlier. A young Jaffa man is making a rousing speech about fighting back against the Ori. Bra'tac and Teal'c arrive - it's a Jaffa summit meeting - and Bra'tac launches into what would no doubt be a very educational speech, if we were listening to it. Instead, we're watching Teal'c, who has spotted a mysterious stranger with a scarred face. Teal'c follows Scarface in slow motion, with menacing music - and there's an explosion...
...and Teal'c wakes up in the infirmary. Lam informs him that he's been unconscious for two weeks - it was touch and go, but he's going to pull through. SG-1 have been watching him in shifts, but wouldn't you know, none of them happen to be there just as he wakes up. Teal'c decides to pass out again, giving SG-1 a chance to be there en masse, next time.
Daniel gives him the run-down: 32 dead, 12 injured. Bra'tac survived - Teal'c looks as surprised as anyone - but they won't let Teal'c get up to see him. Never a good sign. Bra'tac is badly injured, and they're not sure he's going to wake up. Oh, Stargate, don't do this to us now...
Some time later, and Teal'c is up and around. He talks to Landry about a Jaffa called Arkad that the Jaffa believe is responsible for the bombing. Teal'c met him before, on the field of battle, First Prime vs. First Prime, and is not a fan. The Jaffa think he's setting himself up as an alternate leader, and likely planning to hand them over to the Ori. He needs to be eliminated. But Landry won't give Teal'c and SG-1 the okay to go hunt him down. Teal'c gives a little display of Jaffa stubbornness.
And so, we head to the Gateroom to see Teal'c off. Cam tells Landry that he can't persuade Teal'c to stay - he's determined to head off and hunt down Arkad. Landry says he's free to go. Cold, Landry. Cold.
SG-1 have various plans as to how to deal with Teal'c. Cam wants to zat him; Vala ways to go with him. Daniel said he offered already, but Teal'c didn't want them along. Sam says he promised to stay in touch. It seems unlikely.
Teal'c promises a small Jaffa child that the perpetrators will pay with their lives. Daniel is with Bra'tac when he finally wakes up. Yay Bra'tac!
Teal'c tracks Arkad in rustic bars (a little too clean to be disreputable, IMO). A very unsympathetic man says he's not sad about the Jaffa killing one another - given that the Jaffa once enforced Goa'uld rule on his people, you can kind of see why. The man with scars bought explosives on this planet, and Teal'c chokes information out of Unsympathetic Man.
Bra'tac gives Daniel potted history: Arkad was his student for a while, but he was always a bit dark side. Teal'c's mother was murdered, likely by Arkad in revenge for a defeat. Teal'c was First Prime of Apophis at the time, so couldn't go all Jaffa Revenge Thing on him - but clearly he's decided the time has come. Daniel isn't overly concerned for Arkad's safety - but Bra'tac is concerned for Teal'c's.
Reynolds - hi Reynolds! - has been maintaining contact with Jaffa rebels under Ori rule on P8T-365. The Jaffa are being shipped to another planet to mine raw naquadah... but this doesn't seem to be for the Ori. It's for Arkad. He's stockpiling the naquadah, and the rumour is he's planning an attack on Earth.
Now Landry looks like he might let SG-1 get involved.
Scarface arrives be-hooded to his tent. Teal'c looms out of the dark - no one can loom quite as well as Teal'c - and pops him one on the nose.
Scarface wakes again, sometime later, to the delightful sensation of being prodded with the hot end of a burning stick. Teal'c sure knows how to treat a guest. He's taken Scarface out into the forest, and removed his symbiote - but Scarface isn't scared, because he thinks the Ori will ascend him when he dies. Teal'c offers tretonin, in return for information, and tells Scarface all about the Ori scam. Also, about the bomb he's put into Scarface's symbiote pouch, set to go off any moment. Ouch. Scarface refuses to give him any information, and reasserts his believe in the Ori, so Teal'c heads out.
"Where are you going?"
"I am leaving. You are about to explode."
Boom.
Teal'c, man, you are SO COOL.
SG-1 are speculating about Arkad's reasons for attacking Earth. Street cred, misguided revenge for Dakara, Ori instructions... A cloaked cargo ship could sneak through their defences and do considerable damage. Cam thinks Teal'c has the right idea in going after Arkad.
Someone calls in to the SGC - an unfamiliar face (unless you used to watch Eastenders). It's Arkad. He asks for safe passage, to discuss the "plot to brazenly strike at your planet in a most cowardly manner." He wants to offer his assistance. The plot thickens! As does Arkad's accent!
Bra'tac thinks Arkad fed them info about the attack so he could claim to be the one who could prevent it. The IOA want to hear him out - Bra'tac warns them not to trust him.
Dan Arkad has been let through the Stargate, and I'm sorry, I'm okay with American and Canadian Jaffa, but East End Jaffa is really throwing me. Also, "befelled"? ANYWAY. Daniel passes on Bra'tac's best wishes for Arkad's painful death. Arkad says he had nothing to do with the bombing, even though he was opposed to the summit and believes that the Ori are the way to Jaffa salvation... dude, your argument could use a little work. Anyway, he claims he didn't do it, but he knows the people who did. In return for stopping them, all he wants is that they don't try to get in his way. Or 'e'll come rahnd wiv 'is bruvvers an' sort Earf aaht.
Teal'c has returned to Unsympathetic Man, whom we shall now call Lizan for that is his name, and has him tied up in a room. Teal'c wants more info on Arkad - or else.
The IOA want the SGC to do nothing about Arkad - not to provoke him in any way. They need to determine whether he's really a threat - look for his WMDs. But in the meanwhile, they want SG-1 to stop Teal'c... at all costs.
SG-1-minus-Teal'c is on the Odyssey, with plenty of guns but no ideas for what to say to stop Teal'c. Arkad gave them the location of his home base, with - they presume - the intention of making sure Earth is to blame for any attack against him. They beam down, and go huntin' Teal'cs.
Vala suggests they 'accidentally' fail to stop Teal'c from killing Arkad, thus solving the problem. Trouble is, they don't know if that will stop any planned attacks against Earth. What if it really is a separate group? What they need, suggests Daniel, is to capture Arkad, lock him in a room, and threaten to let Teal'c kill him until he reveals all.
I'm with Vala: that's a pretty solid plan.
SG-3 and Reynolds, guarding the Gate, fail to check in. Oops... They're still alive, so it's probably Teal'c... yep, that'll be him. Duck, Cam. Cam tries to lie to Teal'c, and Daniel tries the truth - but sadly Teal'c is in no mood for listening to anything they might say. Arkad must die.
Teal'c takes out Sam, Daniel and Vala with a Goa'uld shock grenade. Cam succeeds in sneaking up on him (that Sodan training always comes in handy), but is ultimately no match for Teal'c. Poor Cam, that's going to hurt when he wakes up. Ouch.
Teal'c breaks in to Arkad's pyramid, while Arkad gets ready for a fight (it's really much better when he doesn't talk). Teal'c gets shot in the back by some random lucky Jaffa, oh noes! He's brought before Arkad, who hands him a staff and proceeds to take advantage of Teal'c's weakened state. Arkad reminisces about the good old days, when Teal'c killed his family - how he admired him then. Uh, okay then. It's just a shame Teal'c won't live to see Arkad bring down the Tauri... All this fighting talk gets Teal'c up, but it's not enough. Arkad draws a sword - and stabs Teal'c in the stomach! He kneels to give Teal'c a few final words - he did kill Teal'c's mother, he confides. At that, Teal'c finds the strength to throw him across the room and on to a hook. Then he pulls out the sword, gets up, and SG-1 arrive just in time to see him kill Arkad ded.
Teal'c wakes up in the infirmary again. Bra'tac is looking much better. Cam has written a report full o' lies: Arkad trapped them, Teal'c rescued them, killing Arkad and getting injured in the process. Oh, and Arkad admitted to planning the attacks, which were going to go ahead no matter what they did. Yeah, says Landry. Too bad they couldn't learn more.
Teal'c confides to Bra'tac that he'd already killed the one who murdered his mother. Arkad just took credit for it - and he got what he deserved.
"You are the son I never had," says Bra'tac. Awwwwwwwwwwwwww. We all choke up.
Thuh end.
Questions...
1) Do you think any of the other SGC leaders would have permitted SG-1 to go hunt down Arkad?
2) Are SG-1 hopelessly compromised when it comes to loyalty to each other over loyalty to Earth?
3) Is this what it's like for North Americans when Stargate uses an actor with a strong regional American/Canadian accent?
4) Is Bra'tac actually immortal and just hasn't mentioned it?
5) Is that Teal'c's coolest line ever or what?
