Redial the Gate FAQ

Jul 10, 2012 23:12

So…you wanna rewatch Stargate SG-1 from the beginning and join fellow fans in discussion (and quite possibly some squee) about each episode? Then you've come to the right place!

Stargate SG-1 may no longer be bringing new episodes to our television sets, but fandom is far from over and to celebrate we're going to be starting from the beginning and watching and discussing one episode a week until we hit the end (and yes, this should take about four years, and no, you don't need to commit to four years).

Each Tuesday two posts will be made, one to start off the discussion for the episode and the other as a place to link to old and new fannish creations from the episode (vids, fic, icons, wallpapers - anything creative and episode-related made by you or anyone else).

redial_the_gate is intended to span all of fandom and we hope this is a place for fans of all ilk - whether you prefer the season 10 team or the season 1 team, whether you think the entire show should be about the Unas or wish we'd had 10 seasons of Nox, whether you are entirely gen or only watch for Landry/Barrett, so long as you love the show we want to have you. All we ask is you don't bash characters/ships/planets (no, that doesn't mean you have to like Apophis) and you stay polite and civil with fellow fans. Disagreements are fine, and to be expected, just play nice and no hitting each other with blocks or toy trucks or the mods might have to step in and borrow Siler's wrench.

FAQ

So how will this work again? Can I post?

Each Tuesday discussion will be opened up for that week's episode with the mentioned two posts - one for episode discussion, one for fannish creations. To keep the community from spamming people's friendslists we'll be limiting posting access and keeping most discussion in comments Before we begin watching a season, there will be a "volunteer post" where community members may request to do an initial episode post in place of a mod.

What is required of me? Do I have to join the community?

Participate as little or as much as you want. You can just wander by every so often to read. You can jump into every discussion and respond to every comment. You can volunteer to make posts. You can be active one month and silent the next. We ask that if you commit to something, you follow through, but we don’t require any commitments.
Anyone can comment on posts, so you don't even need to friend the community to participate (or be a member of LJ). However, if you want to post you will have to join as a member (not just friend/watch it) so we can grant you posting access.

I volunteered! Now what do I need to put in the initial episode post?

We request that the content of these posts be limited to a gen-focus (you have other places to squee in shippy delight - including the comments of this post). For more details, see the Episode Post Guidelines

I really love [certain episode] and want to write a huge post all about [why Jack obviously spent the episode snogging Siler in the supply closet / why the science is completely wrong / the mythological basis behind the alien culture / why Daniel raided a tablecloth store when he was looking for shirts]!

Excellent! Go to the volunteer post for that season and volunteer with your idea. Once it gets approved, you'll be added to the list and mods will give you posting access for that week and you can post anytime after that episode's discussion has begun and before the next episode discussion is announced. Please check the Episode Post Guidelines before you make your post.

Help! Somebody is saying good things in the comments about a [character/pairing/planet/vegetable/alien] that I don't like!

We're sorry? Please feel free to post your own comment about how awesome your favorite [character/pairing/planet/vegetable/alien] is! Just remember this community is open to all fen and try to play nice. We don't want to use Siler's wrench.

Lots of people are talking and the comment threads have collapsed and they're hard to read!

Luckily, sg_fignewton has something to help! Go read this tutorial.

I don't like Tuesdays!

Discussion goes for a week (and you can feel free to keep commenting on previous episodes) so you don't have to play on Tuesdays. It seemed the best day to ensure we'd be caught by the sg1_debrief in a timely fashion. After a while, if Tuesdays prove troublesome, we'll poll the community for a better day.

When does the initial episode post have to be posted by? What if I volunteer for it and don’t do it?

We'd like to see it posted between noon and 9pm on Tuesday, CST (that's the timezone Chicago is in). If you volunteered and this is a problem, notify the mods, otherwise a mod will start discussion if you don't have it posted by 9pm. Other episode-related posts can be made anytime during the week of episode discussion. If you volunteer and don't do it at all you'll make Teal'c angry, and you really don't want to have to deal with that whole Jaffa revenge thing.

When do we start?

July 27th, 2007 is the tenth anniversary of when "Children of the Gods" first aired on Showtime. To celebrate that anniversary we'll be starting off with Stargate (the movie) the Tuesday before (July 24th) and "Children of the Gods" the Tuesday after (July 31st).

Which episode order are you using?

We'll be following the order listed in the Stargate Solutions Wiki.

What about spoilers?

It seems too constrained to limit people to only being able to mention episodes which have already been discussed. For now, we ask that there be no details mentioned about the upcoming movies (this will change after they are released). In addition, not everyone has managed to see season 10 yet, since it hasn't come out in some countries and some people have to wait for dvd, so we ask that if your comment contains spoilers for season 10 you mention so in the comment subject header. Seasons 1-9 and the original movie are fair game.

What about Atlantis?

Since it'll take almost three years for us to reach season 8, when it would be appropriate to watch Atlantis concurrently, we're going to wait until then and poll the active community at that time to see whether we want to include the other show.

I have a question you didn't answer!

Post a comment here and we'll get back to you. Alternatively, you can email us at redial.mods @ gmail.com
